Am I mad or just a petrol head?

Hi all,
Kept me head down low after the incident last summer (crashed my car after about 3 weeks and wrote it off!).

I am back in the game and have my eye on a seemingly nice Raw striker 4age (whats your thoughts?) although im yet to have a good sniff around it. Hopefully I will have something by the summer!!
A very horrible but honest thought process popped into my head today. It was something like...
I have about £6K to spend (loan not cash burning a hole in my pocket!)...
I could by alot of things with that....
My yearly millage is limited to 1500 miles....
My loan will take 2 years to pay off, thats £4 per mile. Not including interest, fuel, insurance, maintainance, tax etc.....
I dont even have a garage for it....
And I want to do track days......
Thats alot of money....
But Im stilling going to do it, roll on the summer!!!
Im I mad and should wait or should I just do it? Oh to make things worse I have already booked to go to the ring in the summer, I STILL HAVE NO CAR!!!

Thanks for any replies, brutal and honest!

for £6k i would rather look at getting a second hand MK, MNR or Fury rather than a striker!

Apart from that, your thinking sounds viable

I love Pinto's, even if i did get mine from P&O!

You've obviously never driven a decent striker then .

Striker is a cracking little car and the 4age is a good engine also. It would and has put many more expensive manufacturers cars too shame in many a race.
Just make sure the steering wheel is bolted firmly in place

£6000, 1500 miles per year, 2 years to pay the loan, surely that's £2 per mile plus interest etc.?

Even so as this is a Locost site, I have to say you're mad.

Buy a hacksaw, get some metal and start a build. Make everything you can, buy at the lowest price possible and only when you have the money in your pocket.

It'll take longer but ultimately it'll be far more rewarding and you'll end up owing nothing.

The steering wheel is QR and I WILL CHECK IT. Twice before I even move!
I would go for a MNR or MK but for that price they are all Pinto or Zetec. I wont to stay away from the semi norm. Plus I like the idea of a high reving CEC. I had a BEC and one day ill have a looney one that I will build. Or a 4age supercharged if this engine and chassis seem good.
I tell you something else about Strikers, Raw ALWAYS answers the phone. I phoned mk and they didnt answer. Maybe one off but thats all it took! They also just won 750MC and RGB classes.
David your right, it is only £2 per mile. I have no garage other wise I would build and not buy. Ultimatly thats what I want to do anyway. Well that and race. One day, one day......

I know its not a striker but...
this is pretty

And it has the right engine!

I can fully understand why you want a 4a-ge. Mine is a fantasic motor and was supplied by RAW.

Its not road registered. Nice though.
What spec and power do you get from your 4age? Black or silver top?

Stick them on a track and i'd take the Striker myself every single time over the MK for sure. Not sure how much of an MNR £6k buys but the Fury is a good shout.

Hi Bi22le,

Ha ha I don't think that's too mad - I'm in a similar situation to fund my build.

I also don't have a garage - so I'm building at my parents' house - 90 miles away!! Means I only get every second weekend or so to work on the car - progress is slow! I'll probably also use most of my holidays this year to go home and work on the car!

Best of luck with the purchase,
Jek

Why not buy a striker kit for 6k, then while you not insuring/fueling/tracking it for the time your building it, you could have the loan mostly paid off and a car personally perfect for you.

i have this want to take my time and build my perfect car bt least under a roof! Otherwise it will be old and rusty even before iva!
Its nice to see so much support for a striker. I had a mac1 bec before. I didnt have it long but it seemed to handle well. It will be nice if i can feel the difference. It seems that 160bhp seems sensible from a 4age. Thats the same as my bec but with alot more torque to. I do loose about 70kg on a bec so it will be interesting!
Thanks for all the posts.

I really don't know why people who don't have enough money insist on buying things they can't afford. It's up to them, but my philosophy is to get another job or whatever if I really want something badly enough.

I personally don't want to work for a bank. I can't see making them smile every time they see me, thinking: "another sucker", while they take big bonuses, etc. It's a competitive world out there: and the banks, here where I live, are ALWAYS number one.

In short: mad. I'm off to walk my dog.

That would be one quick build.

Shop around. £6k will buy you a lot of car. Or you could buy a cheaper car and spend the rest on making it how you want it.

Cheers for the replies. I hope £6k gets me a nice. Nowhere near as nice as my £8k but nice.
I have the money but cant wait! I have to have kids in 2 years (women said so!) so it all has to be paid off by then.
If I had room to build a garage, trust me I would have built one!!

Thanks for the replies.

The Fury is certainly a good choice, but it's essentialy a Striker with more clothes on. Why do you think an MK or MNR is a better choice than a Striker though?
