Decibel meters

Thinking of buying a meter but only need it to check sound level prior to SVA.
There are some cheap ones on the Bay of E but not sure how good/accurate they will be ?
Anyone had any experiences or even has one to sell or lend
cheers,
Chris

I bought one last year before my SVA, it was about £50 but came with a calibration certificate - no point buying one that isn't calibrated as it could be miles out (although I doubt they will be too far out)

Noise levels depend a lot on the environment you test in, as well as the accuracy of the meter, so general opinion is that having your own sound level meter is useful for making comparisons when you change things, but not much good for testing against a specific limit.

A calibrated meter is still only truly accurate if you calibrate it before each use with a (also calibrated) noise generator; they don't drift that badly though so for comparisons it's no problem.
