Describe changes in the retinal vasculature in diabetes, other than diabetic retinopathy, and their relevance, and how to distinguish between them.
you can tell i'm getting desperate!
this question is for my city and G in diabetic retinopathy screening, and i'm foo*ed if i can find the answer...

That's a strange question because all of the classical signs of diabetes in the retina (neovascularisation, cotton wool spots, retinal
haemorhages, retinal exudates etc etc) can be seen as part of diabetic retinopathy. So excluding them you're not left with much unless you say
that some of the soft signs aren't truly required for retinopathy...

They may be alluding to changes in the retina that are associated with diabetes, but aren't caused by diabetes - like the AV nipping, copper and
silver wiring of hypertension??

i wasn't expecting anyone to reply!
this forums pretty immense nick205...
do you think that these would be suitable answers if i expanded on them
hypoperfusion
arteriole occlusion
Arteriosclerosis
Artery occlusion
I see these as more co-morbidity factors rather than diabetic vasculature changes though...

^^^ Would make sense to me - but you can always ask a tutor for some clarification of the question if you're still concerned.... I would also
class them in the comorbidity box rather than direct retinal consequences of DM - though as Ben said, the retinal consequences of DM IS DM
retinopathy!
I'm a physician and Ben is a GP - both of us know quite a bit about diabetes!

The service certainly is underfunded. For the last five months we've had no retinal screening in the whole of Camden because it was deemed
"not fit for purpose" so they shut down the whole shebang whilst "remedial work" was carried out....
I still think it's a strange question though....

Sounds like you have the answer already but if you are still stuck I could ask one of the chaps I work with.

Oh poo! How I wish I had skipped this post.
Go for my retinopathy screening on Thursday. Now as well as starting with glaucoma and cataracts, having a 'diffy ticker' diabetes, carpal
tunnel syndrome and arthritis, I've got all this sh1t to worry about as well.
Still as one of the world's great optimists........f*ck it!
If I was lower mileage, I would probably have made a good donor.
That was a car joke/pun, get it?
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!
