Carb Tuning

I've seen reference to lifting needles in relation to tuning/checking bike carbs. I understand how to lift the needles and that it will determine whether the mixture is too rich or lean, but am unsure what symptoms I am looking out for when doing so. Can anyone point me at a guide that I can use please.
Cheers
Ray

Realistically it's difficult to ascertain whether you've gained or lost (or whether you need to in the first place) by shimming the needles without access to a wideband lambda or a rolling road.

this is a useful link

Nothing in this write-up requires a lambda probe, but obviously it would help a lot to have one and would avoid going in the "wrong direction" with any changes.

This may explain it. Its a single CVK 40 from a KLR single but is the same just x by 4.
