Diagram needed for V8 ballast ignition.

Really need help here on how to wire a Rover V8 dizzy properly with a ballast resistor. Anyone got diagrams or a link???

Its quite easy to work out. Assuming you have a 6 volt coil installed.

Take positive feed from ignition switch to ballast resistor, then connect ballast resistor to coil.

Then take positive feed from starter solenoid input direct to coil, by-passing ballast resistor.

Therefore when starter solenoid is engaged and cranking engine, the coil is supplied with 12 volts and gives a honking big spark. When the engine is running the voltage is bumped down to 6 volts to stop it burning out.

Thats how it was on my Stag. I assume Rover did things the same way.

RV8 doesn't care (within reasonable limits) what coil it uses. However on any engine if you run a 12v coil with a ballast you will be very lucky to get it to run at all. Conversely if you run a 6 or 9v coil without a ballast, you're likely to let the magic smoke out.
