scam?

just sold a car on ebay for more than I think its worth (im not complaining)

but then I just got this email....

quote:

Dear mikefellows, Hello, I bought your Vauxhall VX220 on ebay. I am a car dealer from netherlands and bought many cars on ebay already with 100% positive feedback so you can rely on me. See also my ebay account targetbv where I have over 700positive feedbacks on ebay for cars. Here are my full details: TARGET CARS BV JAN HILGERSWEG 10 5657-ES EINDHOVEN NETHERLANDS MOBILE.00-31-6-13695188 TEL.00-31-40-2925888 Also we have a depot in the UK: Unit 2, Robins wharf, Grove Road, Northfleet, Kent DA119AX. We will collect with a recovery truck. Please confirm me your details as well and how to pay. I can make an urgent bank transfer now (takes 24hrs max) or pay cash but I prefer a transfer as I get a 4% better exchange rate. I am looking forward to hear from you soon, Best regards, Vincent van Soest

now he only has 47 (he claims 700 in the email) feedback

however all his purchases have been cars and all have decent feedback.

scam or not?

edit: just realised he lists 2 accounts (the one he bid with targetcarseu and the one he mentions targetbv)

The issue is whether the bank account used to pay is hijacked.
As long you can be sure that the bank account is legit then there is no scam.
Personally i think you are right being uncertain. Did someone look over it before it sold?

It is possible it's not a scam and that he is genuine as it's quite a rare car.

If it were me I would take him up on the offer of transfering the monies into your account BUT do not release the car until you have confirmed with your bank that the monies are there and connot be returned to him.

Pete.

when i was selling my indy a while ago he contacted me regards buying it,

i was a bit suspicous too, but it all looked legit in the end.

if you do go through with it, insist on cash, payed into your bank account before the car dissapears, that way the bank will check its not forged etc and once its in y our account, only you can take it back out again

hth

Target Cars is fairly well known over here, (not the best reputation, but at least its a real company) so it should be legit afaik.

Mmmmm there are some legit foreign buyers out there.
I sold an XR400 on eBay, I was contacted by a guy from Malta - I was mighty suspicious despite lots of good feedback from buying bikes from the UK.
I got him to ring me to confirm he was legit and to sound him out. Turned out to be a top bloke, sent the courier firm when he said he was going to, paid in cash, all checked by the bank. A very straight forward transaction in the end. Apparently they struggle to get those sort of bikes in Malta. He even sent me a follow up email with the new Maltese registration.

Assuming it is Target Cars why didnt he use his ebay account with 700+feedback or is the buyer just tryging to gain some trust?
Target Cars seem to have a bit of a UK presence

As said the thing that would worry me is the different ebay account used to buy. Maybe telephone them with the number on he website to confirm they are who they say they are ?

Called the number on the website.

nice guy answered the telephone and I explained I was calling to confirm it wasnt a scam.

he told me they had bought a VX220 on ebay today.

he explained he would like to pay by bank transfer (will be paid in 24 hours) and then arrange pickup etc via recovery truck.

all seems pretty legit.

but ive that nagging feeling in the back of my head.

The pound is still relatively weak against the Euro which is driving many foreign transactions at the moment.

My Fury was bought with no viewing and its gone over to Portugal and I was told by the shipping company that collected it that it would be stripped, converted to LHD and sold for 30k Euro's.

If you have cleared funds then you have nothing to fear!

I've got to say I think they are genuine. Bank details have been sent so money should be in Wednesday/Thursday.

Hopefully a call to malc at Yorkshire engines if all is fine

my father in law sold a motorbike in exactly the same way, his bank told him that once the money was transferred then the chap buying it cant get the money back from the account. so once its there its his.
they then came over to his house in an artic lorry with 6 other bikes on.
Apparently its quite a common thing as said before it works out cheap for them buying from here.

There are a lot of open tops/etc like elises and 220's going to overseas buyers at the moment. It a bit of a bone of contention with elise owners and as said it is due to the euro/pound fiasco.
Clear the money into your account before you let the car go.

to close this thread off.

the transaction with target cars was nothing short of effortless. money was sent quickly and efficently. car was collected quickly and efficently.

I cant fault the transaction, much better than some people that turn up to buy cars .

would happily use again and recommend.

Thanks for everyones advice during the process, it does no harm to check up and would do the same again. but a big thumbs up to target cars.
