Dip/main beam

Just trying to wire up my indicator/main beam switches and im getting a bit confused.
Does the dip beam HAVE to turn off with the main beam? My stalk doesnt have a dip beam wire and only seems to turn the main beam, but doesnt cut out the dip beam
Cheers

From memory, Main Beam is in addition to Dip, so they both stay on when you flash.

If using H4 bulbs then yes really, they need to change over, or they won't last too long with both lit at the same time.

If the main and dip are separate bulbs then no, they can remain on.

EDIT: If you have BMW stalks then this would explain, as a lot of them use separate bulbs for main and dip

As just said, they should switch over (although on mine I run with both on). The bulbs won't last long but I seeing as I live in London I rarely need undipped and usually just use the undipped to flash people when they're driving without lights etc etc etc. Yet to be a problem for me though that being said they'll probably blow now!

Mine run dip or main beam

or dip and main beam flash.

to run dip and main for any length of time is going to get very hot indeed.

Electrics are not my strong point but I think you need a 5 pin relay.

You wire it so dip is on, the when the relay is activated it switches over to main.

I think, possibly, maybe.

Cheers for the response guys,

Ive been following the BMW wiring diagram trying to work it out. On the BMW the dip and main are seperate which would explain them both being on when on main beam. My plan is to use russbosts projector headlights, which again would mean running main beam and dip beam seperate so this wouldnt cause any problems then.

Cheers guys

What light switch and stalks are you running.
Mk2 escort had 3 stalks, one of the pair on the right was lights off-side-main/dip , (a lot of modern cars have replaced this with a rotory switch between o/s door and steering wheel.)
So when main/dip is selected on the Righthand stalk, power is passed to the left stalk which in default position is Dip (output yellow wire), push stalk away from you switches dip off and main on (white - with Blue/white to dash warning light). Pull towards you = flash which is both main and dip (separate ign positive power supply to power flash when lights off). Hope that helps paul.
