I would have thought the conversion would cost as much if not more than a new one.
There are electronic speedos in the old stylee or you could take your old style face and put it on a new electric one

cheers, !!

we are getting closer to a result,
i want my my dash/clocks to remain as they are, but as the speedo is crap, due to the cable routing, and the depending on which gearbox is in the car, my idea was to have a speedo that actually worked

I think Speedy Cables will do it but it will cost.

smiths (aka: CAi) seem to have a few different electronic classic ones at the moment and a few options like chrome surounds etc....

(from a very quick search it looks like merlin motorsport are selling them a bit cheaper than most)

I have some old mgb smiths 1972 speedo and tach that I may try to convert to electrical imputs. I already have a tack that has the same sweep and limits that should fit right in the smiths tach if I can get the smiths needle to fit the other shaft. I also have a couple of brand new ford (mercury marauder speedo (and clutsters) that is going to be a close fit to see if I can take the inards out and see if I can at least fit the air core meter and odometer/trip into the original case. It will require refacing the gauge from 120 mph to 240 kph though

Thanks

yes it can be done, possibly even by yourself.

there are 2 companies that deal with speedo refurb:
http://www.speedograph-richfield.com/
and the one already mentioned, if not the same company.

bear in mind that with electric speedo you cannot have the little cogs but an LCD display as shown in those examples.

Another option is to fit a electric motor to drive the speedo - I looked into this and got some way to making a controller prior the the speedo innards jamming.

bear in mind the electric speedo probably have a controller insdie them that convert pulese to dial movement via a stepper motor - if you were to find one and use the innards, then you would need to modify the software - not easy or else use a speedo healer - much easier.

you mau hav difficulty in find speedo that has the LCD display in the same palce as your mechancial digits.
