2.4 efi v6 to type 9 gearbox.

Hi folks,
My first post.
I'm presently re-building a 2.4 efi v6 cologne engine, which will be married to a sierra type 9 gearbox.
The advice I need is , which bits do I now need to make it all work ?
Flywheel.
Clutch.
Bellhousing.
Starter motor.
So , all you v6 guru's, heeeeeeellp, please.
Thanks Alan.

Hi

I am indeed.

see my web site for pics.

I have a 2.4 cologne v6 thats with the type 9 it came with from the donor car. There are not a huge amount of 2.4 compared with 2.9 engines, but what do exist seem to come with a manual box, which isnt true for the 2.9.

Apparently, the box from a pinto engine will 'fit' but the input shaft wont properly engage in the clutch and will cause premature failure. The spigot that goes into the crank shaft/flywheel is too short.

Id suggest you get a V6 box - type 9 - from another cologne engine. try doing a search on posts with V6 and type 9 in, as this has been discussed a few times....

v6 2.4

Hello again,

Thanks to Joel and Steve.

My engine came from an automatic granada .
So, another question is will the 2.9 flywheel fit the 2.4 crank ?
Thanks Alan.

I think the 2.4 is just an understroked or underbored 2.9 - its deffo the same family - so there is a good chance I think.

You must fit a pilot bearing (aka "spigot bush" or "stem wheel bearing " to the end of the crank to support the first motion shaft,

You can use the flywheel from the 2.8 cologne which is lighter than the 2.9 and more common. You can then use the type 9 gearbox from any of the following without modifications, Capri 2.8i, mk2/very early mk3 granada 2.8, sierra XR4i. Obviously you then just use the complete clutch assembly from one of these cars too, as you now effectively have everything "2.8 cologne" behind the engine. This is definitely the easiest way of doing it as the bits are not too tricky to get in scrappies. (though I would use the 2.9 not the 2.4, same weight/size so free cc's and much more common!)

Its an extra 20 hp.

for me, getting the engine and gearbox all in one was a deisrable, and worth the 20hp loss...

Just another nod for using the Capri/XR4i/mk3 Granny box. I've a 2.8 Cologne with the an XR4x4 clutch and alloy bellhousing and a type 9 from a Capri 2.8.

There's a diagram in my photo archive showing the length of the various shafts on the v6 type 9. Compare that to a 4 pot version and you'll see there the input shaft is about an inch longer on the v6.
