Airbag????

On my build i changed the steering column from the donor, cortina mk5, to a mk5 escort.
it had nicer controls and a pair of proper keys!

also on this it came with an airbag.......reading earlier posts i saw that some people have taken the air bag out!

is this needed?
will it pass the IVA with an airbag in the steering wheel?

its not currently connected!

Where do I Stand with this?

Cheers

Aaron

If the bag and the charge are still in the wheel stay well away until the charge is disarmed by a competent person. The charge here in early North American cars was equvilent to a 12 guage shot gun shell. We have had cases of small women killed by the airbag in minor accidents.

Is the airbag in American stuff not larger to offset the fact that people just will not wear a seatbelt over there? I've heard that's the case but that doesnt mean it's true!
The theory is without it being connected it cant go off but that's theory...
The trouble is when they're made safe it's done by discharging them which destroys the centre of the wheel & you want to keep that bit! There must be a way to do it but I doubt it would meet with approval from the manufacturer or the HSE!

It is techically "live" but with no wires connected!

will it pass the IVA like this?

I removed it from the steering wheel.
Kept well out of the way of the direction of deployment.

From experience I know that
a) repairing the wheel after setting off the bag is well nigh impossible
b) the bag is held in place by rivets - on my second try I drilled these out. this worked fine.

I haven't heard of bags going off when not intended to, so I reckoned it wasn't very likely, but as I say I kept out of the line of fire.

You don't want air bags on the finished car when you go for IVA - you would have to prove that the sensors and circuitry that sets it off has been certified to operate at the correct time after a crash of more than a specified force - which of course it never would be in a car like ours.

At an Iva a couple of weeks back the guy asked if the air bag was still there. He would of failed it if it had.

No it will fail with a live airbag, I errr! disarmed mine Pictures in my archive how I did it.
That's not to say that you should do it the same way, or at all, is it!
