Shortened rack

Does anyone know of a company that will shorten a mk2 escort steering rack? the Escort rack has 600mm between pivot points and I need about 480.

I was also toying witha custom rack, does anyone know of a manufacture and the price?

ATB Dan.

Flaming river and Unisteer have a range of custom racks, not sure if they have one short enough and they are quite expensive, more than $500, but then there would be shipping and VAT on top unless you know someone travelling to USA that could bring one back.

I spent a bit of time looking for 630mm between inner pivots and made some notes on what I found. Not sure if any of these could work.
Fiat X1/9 - 20.55", 522mm
Saab 900 79/83 - 13.9", 353mm
Toyota Starlet (rwd?) - 20", 508mm
Viva HB/HC - 20", 508mm
These were from various web searches and I don't have copy of the links to where I found them but they might give you a starting point for further research.

Some really short racks available, but not sure if any good on a road car.

Also found a mention that Federal Mogul's "Steering & Suspension Parts from TRW Catalog X-4000" contained a list of dimensions of their range, but I was never able to find a copy on line.

I could probably be able to do it for you.

Did I show the the pic of my rack I shortened to 300mm long? Wasn't difficult just had to take the mount off one side to fit in the lathe then made a sleeve to add welding together to keep the body parallel and straight.

Then had the turner to machine the ball joint end and threads again.

Let me know if you want it.

Graham, that would be great, i've just picked up a standard rack off Matt.

When would a good time to pop round and drop off the rack?
