Tin Top Advice
I have a 1.8turbo passat and it seems to be using more fuel than I would expect it to use.
Now when I had a 2.3v5 golf i could get over 40 to the gallon, with the passat I get around 30-35 mpg.
I have noticed that the car is more responsive when the engine is cold and when the engine is fully warmed up the temp reads about 80degrees and
doesn't touch the standard 90degrees, the tick over is fine when warmed up to around 800revs.
Where would be a good place to start looking.

P.S. Thinking of getting re-mapped also to over 190HP.

Has it got a MAF sensor ? Symptoms fit.
On Rovers with BMW engines we disconnect them to test if they are within calibration, without the signal from the MAF the engine ECU switches to a
default injection map if it runs better the MAF is foobared.

So how would mine run better, the mpg or the engine is more responsive.

Check your tyre pressures.
My 1.9tdi PD Passat would show lower (although not much) mpg when a tyre or 2 went low.

Just disconnected the maf sensor and went for a spin.
Now , it did seem to be more responsive but the idle was rough and it kept stalling at junctions, then the cat warning light came on.
What do you think.

Has the mpg of the Passat actually got worse? i.e. were you getting 40+mpg and now only 30-35mpg?

sounds like either coolant temp sensor or thermostat as you say its not getting to 90 the ecu is running it richer as it thinks the engine is colder
then it is.

I think I will clean the maf with spray cleaner just to help and then change temp sender and thermostat as they are cheap to buy first.
