Source of thin stainless steel sheet
Hi there,
I'm after a 18in x 18in sheet of thin (0.5mm or so) stainless steel for a heat shield for my turbo and headers.
At the moment the bonnet gets too hot to touch, which can't be a good thing.
I could use ally, but with stainless I can bolt it to the headers with no fear of melting.
I'm guessing it will be easiest to buy something dead cheap (kitchen item perhaps) that is made from this, and disassemble.
Any thoughts on a suitable thing to start with?

Good thought, B&Q is £39 for a 60cm x 60cm square though. No Ikeas near us.
I didn't want to spend that much really. Maybe pop down the dump and see if I can find an old stainless sink.

I sourced alot of stainless for a project a few years ago.
I went to my local tip and spoke to one of the guys there. They let me take the side panels off of washing machines.
Its free then and job done!!! Just sand the white powder coating off.

Local industrial kitchen sink manufacturer - I went to one round the corner, and got a 5' x 7' sheet of galvanised steel to line the
bottom of my trailer - cost me £7. He was making most things from Stainless to supply local hotels / restaurants etc - it was like aladdin's
cave!

Other thought is - local scrap metal merchants - I made most of my car's brackets from an old ally baker's tray which cost me £2.
But don't bother with the council recycle centre - full of jobsworth plonkers.

Try looking in the yellow pages for stainless fabricators or stick stainless and the first bit of your postcode in google maps.
I needed some stainless strip to make a repackable silencer. I went in, told them what I was after and asked if they had any offcuts I could give them
some tea money for. He cut me a 8' long 2" wide strip from an 8x4 sheet on the guillotine. I asked him what he wanted for it and he said
don't worry.
G&D Stainless Fabrications, big thumbs up from me.
They may want some money for an 18" square, but it's the sort of thing they may have knocking about spare.

Out of prinicple. If memory serve me correctly the owner of OBP used to be the owner of Luego some time back, when they went bump. If this is the case
i was one of many to lose money and therefore would rather make my own. More satisfying as well i think.
Maybe i'm wrong?

That event pre-dates my entry into the kit - car scene, but I have heard that some people were caught in the collapse.
