De Dion and book chassis
Sorry to ask a stupid question but does the GTS deDion rear fit the book chassis dimensions?
Also, does this mean you require the Sierra front end as well eg. uprights, rack etc.
Sorry if this has been answered before but I could not find a definitive answer in the search.

I have bought GTS rear end and am fitting it to a book chassis.
As you're using a sierra rear end the track will be a few inches wider than the escort axle, I think it fills the rear arches nicely.
You can fit either standard or wider front wishbones, your choice really. I am using standard as I already had them and do't think it'll
make much difference..

I built my own as I wanted to. I think it's arguable whether you save any money after you've bought materials, a welder if need be and
then the time and effort required, however it is hugely satisfying.
I've also modified my chassis from the book design, apart from the minor mod to fit the axle I've changed the tranny tunnel so I can get
the engine further back and put some extra triangulation (around floor and engine bay) to strengthen the chassis a little.

Any reason why they designed the frame area (tubes O1, O3) bellow the fuel tank to step-up and be horizontal? I realise that tubes RU1 & RU2 need
to be lower and horizontal to make room for the De Dion tube to clear, but it seems to me (and I'd do this for my Locost), to simply attach O3
directly to the ends of the newer, shortened RU1 & 2 (at X1 & 2 junctions) and slope up to the original position of O1 (a la Caterham). Looks
cleaner and less work... Just my opinion...

Hi Peter,
Not entitely sure what your suggesting, but, basically it was done as it is because then the back panel moulding we already had fits well, and it
keeps it as close to the book chassis as possible. Thus making it more suitable for every component suggested in the book as possible e.g. fuel tank
etc..

Do you have any info regarding the changes needed to the 'book' rear end for the fitment of the GTS DeDion?
I hope very much to go this route but I don't want to do any mods myself which may compromise the chassis integrity and hence want advice from
the experts.

I like the idea and simplicity of darrens de dion set up. Looks good in the pictures ned!
Is there option for using a watts style linkage rather than a panhard rod to locate the beam?

Doug,
I'm still debating going, taking time off work etc. Not much point if you can't get a ride now is it!
I imagine you could modify the dedion somehow to use watts linkage, but why bother? the existing system is as per the book and it wors, less messing
around with the chassis, and for what gain?

If you use a DeDion rear (with Sierra shafts diff etc) and a book front, can you use different tyre offsets/widths to counter the track difference or
is there no need to worry to much?
I've read the threads on this and it seems people prefer to use the wider front wishbones to make the tracks similar. I hoped to use a standard
front with a DeDion rear.
Any thoughts?

Mark,
As said before, my car will be different tracks front/back. I know jasper is running big wheel spacers (2+" each side) on the back of his book
(escort)width car with no detrimental effects.
You can run different offset wheels front/back as long as they're not too extreme (eg alter kpi angle) though I doubt this is really a
consideration worth making.

the middle are okay as long as I can sort them!!!

Looking at the pictures in this thread I'm thinking a GTS De-dion axle will not fit a +4" chassis very well. I'm guessing the
brackets on the axle will not line up with the brackets on the chassis for the 4 longitudinal links. Any thoughts?
I did email Darren last week about this, but I suspect he's wading through a backlog of stuff right now. If it does fit my credit card is eager
to get a spanking ASAP.

I think someone mentinoed the +4 thing before. I think the outcome was that they could either leave the ears off for you to weld on to the tube to
your own dimensions or move them on the tube if you supply the dimensions..
probably talking bollox though

I am talking to darren at the moment about getting a +4 dedion made up. darren thinks he can get his man to weld it up fully, ears and all, but to
factor a bit more money (£20 or so I think he said) for the time taken to cut the ears down and re-jig.
In fact, I need to send him another email..
beware if you are making a +4" chassis that RU1 and RU2 have to change to accomodate the dedion bar: they drop to horizontal under the bar, and
they need to move in a bit to clear the hub carriers / ears. I'm not sure exactly how much they need to be inset on a +4" chassis,
I'm trying to find that out from Darren at the moment.

Sounds good. I have just chopped the rear of my chassis off, with a view to either sorting the existing atempt at an Avon type IRS, or putting in a
de-dion. I'm being strongly attracted to the De-dion route as it is so much simpler and I don't have to worry so much about welding
wishbone brackets in exactly the right place etc.
Let me know if/when Darren is good to go on this and I'll be sticking my order in.

I'll be starting work on my second car soon and have a chassis (as per the book) arriving soon. Going the GTS de-dion route, is the only mod
necessary welding on the upright brackets for the diff?

Hi Pat,
Yes your 4x4 stuff will bolt straight to the dedion axle. The mods to the chassis can be found on the website as a pdf download.
The only mods are really the diff mounting brackets, and the flat section under the dedion.

Cheers darren - couldn't figure it out at first as i didn't build my book chassis, but all is now clear!
Cracking that we can donwload stuff like that - better than most build manuals!
What's the lead time if I order it just in the new year?
