Race Technology Dash ECU Serial Cable

This cable http://www.race-technology.com/serial_interface_2_7535.html
costs £150. It has a little box in the middle, does it actually do anything or am I able to just use a normal serial cable?

there is probably no ponit in you getting it really unless your using an ecu with can!
i am usng it with the dta s60 ecu.the can can monitor loads of stuff but he needs to make upthe cable depending on the ecu. call rally technology from ebay and they will supply it all and make the leads up for you. have you got the 4 black buttons also? for programming the dash!

Lol, the ecu doesn't have can...but it doesn't need it as the race tech dash outputs serial or CAN.

What I'm basically asking is, is that little black box a necessary box of tricks that converts the ecu signals to something the dash can interpret, or is it just a serial cable that i can get much cheaper elsewhere?

am not exactly sure what you want this to do? i thought the whole idea of can was that it can send shed loads of info direct from the ecu to the dash, oil pressure, oil temp, coolant temp, rpm, throttle position etc which then frees up the analogue inputs for other things.
you will probably get away with using the analogue inputs for what you need and therefore may not need the serial cable. the dash is easy to wire up using the dash analogue inputs.
not sure the dash outputs can? as i cant understand why it would need to and where it would send it!

I'm just asking what the little in line black thing is. If you have a look at the serial cable it has a black box between both connectors. I want to know if that litlte box does annything imparticular or whether I can just buy myself a standard (and much cheaper) serial cable

Hi everyone,
Finally I have managed to get onto Locost. Seems a great site. As Paul says I sell Race Technology Products cheaper than anywhere, so if anyone would like some technical info etc please feel free to call or message me. I am car mad as well as selling Dash's etc so love to gas on. I am building a MEV Rocket at the mo too plus have many weird and wonderfull car such as S1400 rally car, 205 RWD & a FWD Escort Cosworth not to mention Motorcycles & Jet Skis

To answer the question above, unfortunately the interface cable is not just a simple cable, it needs programming to suit individual ECU's. The cable desifers the info between the ECU and Dash. Hope this helps.
