F1 jobs. IT Manager for Race Team- Mclaren

Anyone interested in working for Mclaren on the race team?

I've just heard that McLaren are looking for someone to run IT on the race team and I thought someone here might be interested. It's not advertised on their site as they end up with 1000's of CV from chancers so they tend to just put the word out.

Must be willing to travel the world, sleep with pit girls and experience the highs and lows of F1 racing!

Oh, on the downside: Work ridiculously hard and handle stress well!

I believe you'd have to do other non-IT related jobs when out at races too, for example, my friend who did the job a few years ago used to be one of the team firemen during the actual races.

If you're interested and have appropriate experience then let me know and I'll forward your CV on to my contact.

EDIT: Dont know much about the job myself. Will see what I can find out.

All the best,
James

P.S. If you dont do IT but are interested in working in F1 then get Autosport magazine. I've seen quite a few F1 jobs in there with various teams from painting F1 cars to factory logistics.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

It's not compulsory to be like the Comic Shop guy in The Simpsons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Book_Guy to work in IT!
But maybe a little massaging (ahem) of job titles is worthwhile in this instance!

In certain goth circles I'd imagine Grave Digger makes you the new Brad Pitt!!!

For those that want details

Okay, as I said, I have no proper job spec for this which I understand makes it hard to apply for the job/tune CV. I've just applied for a 'hear about' job myself and it was very hard to get things targeted.

The guy who's told me about the job has sent me a copy of his linkedIn profile for when he did it a few years ago. Hopefully this will be of some use to you.

Race Team ICT Analyst McLaren
Privately Held; Automotive industry

June 2004 – August 2005 (1 year 3 months)

Responsible for all aspects of IT on the McLaren F1 Race Team.

I travelled with the team to every location on the Formula 1 race calendar and delivered the IT systems required for the race weekend. This involved designing the rugged systems required for the harsh garage environements, deploying the servers and infrastructure into the garage, supporting all race engineers and servers during the race weekend and bringing the servers back to Woking afterwards.

I was the only IT personell track side and as such learnt how to work under massive pressure and to be extremely creative in my problem solving.

The technologies that I looked after were:

Windows Server (2000/2003)
SQL (2000/2005)
Various custom McLaren applications
Cisco VPN
Cisco Networking (Switching & Routing - Copper & Fabric)
WAN Optimisation Equipment
VOIP

Desktop support of Windows XP

In addition to my support duties, I was also ran car telemetry for Pedro De La Rosa and Alex Wurz during their 3rd car testing sessions in the 2005 season.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He also says:

"Not sure about salary. It's probably around £40-45K + loads in expenses. It's bloody hard work too, I wouldn't normally recommend it to most people, but then again, some people are too into F1 to care ;-) "

Obviously adjust the profile above for the fact that things have moved on a little since he did it so it'll be modern OS' and hardware/software.

Hope that's of some help!

James

We dont get many jobs advertised on here for that sort of rate do we!!! lol

The HR at Mclaren are a pleasure to deal with as well from my experience, unlike some places where trying to contact them is like pulling teeth!

F1 isn't that hard to break into, the teams I work with are crying out for competent engineers at the moment, there were 60 job vacancy's last month were I work, the HR woman even came round asking me if I had any mates who were looking for jobs.

They are advertised on the usual 'Jobsites' as well, you just need to be able to pick them out as the recruiters don't like to give away who they're recruiting for or people go direct. The easiest thing to do is know were the teams are based, for instance a 'specialist car maker in Surrey' is going to be Mclaren then you can spot the F1 jobs.
