Finding mortar in a rendered/painted wall

I need to put up some vine eyes with wires for a climber on my front wall - problem is it's rendered and painted white, so I can't tell where the bricks are and where the mortar is under the paint.

Is there any easy way to figure out where to hammer the vine eyes so that it hits the mortar rather than the actual brick?

Ta,
Pavs

If it was me I would use a hammer drill and rawlpugs rather than trying to find the mortar..............and you then get the vine eyes where you want/need them rather than where the mortar happens to be.

Good luck.

John

Yeah as above, stick a trellis up.

Thanks - I like that option much more! Rawl plugs it is - gives me an excuse to use the hammer drill

Drill it. Sometimes the mortar is harder than the brick anyway!
