Water Trouble

Really puzzled, Mondeo keeps overheating.

Start it up run engine for 30 mins with car stationary, ticks over fine, temperature gauge rises to about halfway, then starts dropping, then radiator fan comes on, no problem.

Get in and drive it and after about ten miles of trouble free motoring, temperature gauge suddenly heads towards the red. Stop car, lift bonnet and there is steam coming out of the expansion tank cap and I can hear the water boiling in the head.

Anybody got any ideas?

I have noticed that when engine runs with car stationary all the water from the expansion tank disappears into the system. Is this normal?

Car had a full garage service two weeks ago together with a new water pump and front water rail.

Help!

The thing I don't understand is why it is ok when stationary.

Aaargh.

Drove 16 miles to work this morning, no problem at all, except temperature gauge didn't register at all most of the way apart from about 1 minute when it rose to normal, then back down to nothing.

Could it be thermostat sticking open and closed intermittently. Is that possible?

Also is water supposed to come out of the return pipe into the expansion tank when the engine is revved. I assume that is just the action of the water pump. Is that right?

Are all the hoses getting hot as they should? Cold spots would indicate a lock somewhere in the system.

HTH,

Yes, they appear to be, but I can only check them when it's stationary, and it doesn't overheat then.

Anyone fancy a ride on the front of a Mondeo?

Have had similar probs, though not at the same time.

Intermittent overheating was caused by a failing radiator that would clog with chunks of corrosion now and again, while the failure to register much temperature was a broken thermostat spring.

Hope something rings a bell.

Perhaps a back-flush (ooer missus! ) may help?

Ive got the same problem the other way car gets up to normal temp no bother then drive it and the temp drops right down low. The heater gets hot standing but on the move it gets colder. Its never boiled over ever and since it never gave bother I left it well alone. When my father inlaw owned the car he sent it to the main dealer who had the car for two weeks and they never solved the problem. L reg mondy had it rad changed a good few years back. It gets the expensive oil and always starts. As with all mondys it has a huge appetite for sparkplugs. Since it never gave trouble other than the heater being cold in winter its no priority but it would be nice to know whats up.

Bugger. Started to get hot on the way home, stopped car, called AA.

The man in the big yellow van he say:

HEAD GASKET

Had this test thing like a syringe with green liquid in. told him instantly. Which was nice.

So now I've got 2 cars off the road.

Was going to say HG. Temp not working usually symptom of no water left circulating around it hence no reading.
