Zetec Turbo?
Im looking at going down the engine swap route next winter (i know its ages away but bear with me) Im planning to run the trusty pinto for next summer
as i have the winter to finish off the niggly IVA bits i had to do to get it tested and now its done i can adjust it to the car i wanted to start
with.
im looking to go Zetec Turbo and because of the time span involved id like to get a shopping list together so i can grab those bargins as they
appear.
Whats the best starting point 1.8 or 2.0 - silvertop or black top.
Management?
Turbo
Manifolds
etc etc
+ Requirments to mount to a type 9.
All comments / help welcome.

Hi, we have done several zetec turbo conversions, all advise free!
Best to use 2.0L, upto 240bhp on totally stock engine. Blacktop has a better head but silvertop has better rods and is better for a locost install as
the waterpump is more suited for RWD.
If 240bhp is enough then at stock silvertop is best, if more power is required i would suggest silvertop bottom end with forged pistons and blacktop
head, use silvertop head gasket.
We only use megasquirt MS2 V3.0 managment with 450cc injectors
Upto 240bhp a stock escort RS turbo manifold and turbo will do, we cut the CVH flange off the manifold and weld on a zetec flange.
Not sure how much power a type 9 will take, but you can use the zetec 1600cc flywheel with unrated clutch and cosworth 4x4 starter. You will need to
modify your clutch release arm.

Don't forget to head out to wollaston sometime when your bedding in that pinto!

I would suggest looking at an mk1 Focus RS engine, YB cossie or a ZVH converstion.
I looked long a hard into a Zetec turbo but the truth is that it will cost just as much money to buy something else with more power and a lot less
head ache.
But if your in the mind set of a Zetec turbo as i was you need to do the following, and these are the basics:
Drill a return oil feed into the sump from the turbo
Drill out and re-tap the head to accept new studs for ERST or FRST manifold (careful because one of these is right on an oilway)
If its going in a 7 the you need to make up an inlet manifold and fuel rail or modify one from a rover 4 series from memory? Anyway thier like hens
teeth.
Lower the compression by either changing the pistons or using an de-compression plate which means two head gaskets and twice and much to go wrong.
Now depending on managment you need to fit and tdc sensor, cam sensor and knock sensor which can mean changing/modifying flywheels etc. The easy
option is to use the EFI management from a fiesta RST but the plumun is far to bit to fit in a 7.

Good engine, and would work with a type9 with the right bell housing although i dont think it will last. C20LET's Leak oil, there prone for it.
Cheap though, ive seen them go on ebay for as little as 600£ complete.

This is the Volvo derived 5 cylinder engine from the Focus ST (as the eBay description states). It was never fitted to the Fiesta (from the factory
at least).

hey carl
the limiting factor will be the T9 as to how much power u can have so you really need to address that issue before deciding how far you want to go.
a 300bhp zetec is not hard to build these days at all but there are also other options out the ie: the nissan 1.8T engine and even the turbo redtop
vaux engine, the problem with chasing the power is the rest of the drive train needs upgrading and that ends up costing as much as the extra power.
stick with the pinto and in the meantime collect parts for a duratec conversion imo

You do not need to lower the compression is you run medium boost (up to 12psi) The mk1 focus RS engine runs the same compression (9.5/1) as the stock
NA focus.
The standard 2.0L STOCK blacktop or silver top will take 240bhp all day as long as the mapping is spot on.
No need to drill the head to take the RST manifold, cut off the RST manifold flange and weld on a zetec exhaust flange (from blacktop focus exhaust
manifold)
The cheapest option for engine management is megasquirt, the fiest RST is getting rare and cannot be mapped (the stock CVH map IS well off for the
2.0L zetec)
The cam sensor is not required, but if a zetec 1600cc flywheel is used the trigger is already there to be used.
I agree with your comment about the inlet manifold, as you say a rover tomcat manfold can be modified to suit.

I can stick a blacktop head straight onto a silvertop block? ...without any machining?
Moar details please!
Does the CR drop or would it be the same?
I thought there were physical differences that meant this was a no go? (oilways etc)
