1800-2000 zetec swap

Hi, I'm new on here so apologies if i'm asking a question that has been asked before. I'm considering swapping the 1800 (silvertop) zetec for a 2lt silvertop that I have lying about. The 2lt has a fast road head and kent FZ2002 cams, ARP rod bolts and is low mileage. The 1800 is nice, it too is low mileage and goes OK, it's on throttle bodies and has been mapped but runs a feedback loop from wideband lambda to keep AFR about right. How easy is the 1800 to 2lt swap, what will I need to source, I'm thinking about things like water pump, sump etc but not sure what I will be able to re-use from the 1800. I'm expecting to be able to swap the throttle bodies and exhaust straight over but its the sump that I'm most concerned about, will I be able to swap that over too, how similar are the 1800 and 2lt? has anybody done this alrerady and what advice can you offer, I could wimp out and put the cams in the 1800 to give a little more but Ideally I'm after about 200bhp and I'm not going to get that from a 1800. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In addition to this I have over 20 years experience of building performance crossflows, if anyone needs any crossflow advice or replacement engines feel free to contact me. Thanks again.

Welcome!

I am no expert far from it. As I am looking to fit a 1800 Zetec Silvertop to my next build I have been looking at what is involved and would say that what ever fits your 1800 should go across to your 2000.

Things like sump gaskets on ebay seem to be the same from 1600 to 2000, every thing seems to be in the same place. Oil filter moved from silver to black top. Inlet manifold plates etc

I would assume that if you have both engines a bit of measuring would soon tell you what can move across or not. The west field site shows them having the same height and length.

As said it should be a straight swap, other than some mapping changes. I did the same with Blacktop Zetecs and everything swapped over.

I think the water pump on the 2000 turns the other way (not 100% sure), so you'll need to do some jiggery pokery stuff with the belt.

Why do they call Port Harcourt "The Garden City"?...... Becauase they can't spell Stramash.

Engine externally are identical thus will be strait swap but ther are a couple of things that need attending too.

You will, as mentioned above, need to change the water pump to an Escort one, don't buy a 1.8 Mondeo one as its the same as a 2.0 litre Mondeo one.

The flywheel/clutch on the 2.0 is a boat anchor, the 1.8 is a direct swap, just change it over.

While the flywheel is off you need to fit a spigot bearing into the end of the crank (unless one has been fitted already of course).

Sumps are a strait swap (my 2 litre had a modified 1.8 on it) but you will need to use the modified pickup from your modified sump.

The 2.0 oil pumps put the filter in a slightly different location, its been known to catch the steering column, pumps are interchangeable.

Will need a re-map as you have already acknowledged but that would apply if you fitted the cams into the 1.8.

something to consider..may or may not be the case

The 2l silvertop has oil jets that spray underside of pistons
I used a 1.8 oil pump on my 2l because of the filter clearence issues with column
Still had to go with a remote filter in the end

I had rattly tappets, changed mains and big ends and new lifters...issues still exhisted and very little change in the oil pressures after changing things out

after trying lots of voodoo I ended up giving in and getting another low milage 2l engine which didnt rattle in the donor car

swapped the oil pump and water pump - and I still get the rattle now and again - oil temp and presures measure OK even when it does the rattle (sounds like a pair of lifters not lifting enough)
I am suspecting the oil pump - despite it being a brand new item
Only common parts (as far as oil is concerned) between the 2 engines are the oil pump, sump and pickup - problem is still there
I have the original 2l oil pump here and aim to get it machined so I can use it - I also have a tiger era sump and pickup to rule those out as well

I cannot see any reference to the differences between the pressures/flow rates on the 1.8 and 2L oil pumps so its all based on a hunch at the mo
(though I know some of the 1.8's did have the under piston spray jets- which does kind of bust my theory)

I don't think anyone else has had these issues I get...or if they have they are keeping quiet (LOL)

Regards
Rob

Would never buy non OEM oil pump again. When I rebuilt a 2 litre some years ago although the engine had good oil pressure I fitted a new pump from a well known part seller as a simple precaution. Oil pressure always appeared high but eventually (too late) found the cause, the relief valve was sticking, it stuck once too often and blew out the filter "O" ring dumping 5 litres of Motul's finest on the road and wrecked the crank. Saved about £10 on the pump and cost considerably more to sort, never again. Parts are cheap for a reason sometimes.
