What actually is power steering fluid?

Hi there guys, The power steering completely sh*t itself. Got a unit to replace it. But its going to be in need of some fluid.
We have Tractran10 (tractor transmission/hydraulic oil) also gear oil, and hydraulic fluid.
The car is a 92 ford falcon, they do sell little things of fluid but they are like 10bucks a litre.
Any thoughts people? Im thinking just bung some hydro fluid in it?
Cheers, Jason

Get the correct auto-transmission fluid.

Go get the right stuff for the job...

Different oils have different chemicals in them.... some are not sympathetic with types of rubber etc that are used in PAS systems...Would be a pain if the oil degrades seals and you get leaks...

It's going to be an oil of some description! Guess the weight (viscosity) and the additives to play PS Russian Roulette. How much was the new rack? (and pump)?

Only on some Citreons and Roll Royce/Bentleys which use very special fluid in both the brakes and PAS.

PAS fluid is the same as auto-transmission fluid but auto-transmission fluids are not all the same same for a start an auto-transmission can be based on whale oil , mineral oil, or synthetic oil.

Usually PAS fluid is a Dexron II mineral based auto-transmission fluid BUT it isn't always also you can't assume the grade used in a car transmission is the same as in the power steering.
Also apart from Citreons and R-R/Bentley some VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda vehicles use a highly specialised fluid.

Many cars will use the same ATF fluid in both PAS as well as their gearboxes.

It also makes a brilliant engine flush..

snip .

Always check. Many modern transmission are filled with a very tightly specified synthetic fluid often unique to the transmission and car model but a lot of power steering system are filled with a Dextron IID mineral based fluid.
If you use a wholly synthetic fluid in a PAS system designed for mineral oil in many cases the the seals will shrink and the system will leak.

2 month old pump cost me a pint! There are loads of these old cars out here.
Ended up buying ford spec PAS oil, Bloke said that the tractran10 would have done the job for a while, before "doing abit of destruction"??
Thanks for all the replies guys!
Jason
