Reason for starter bulge in bellhousing

Is there any reason for the size of the starter motor bulge on the Pinto bellhousing?

Reason I ask is that a couple of trouble makers have suggested I drop the engine a little more. The problem is that the back of the starter bulge will come rather rapidly into contact with the tunnel rails with nothing to shield it other than the fuel pipe!

Was wondering at the possibilities of cutting off the 'corner' of this piece and then welding a 3mm plate over the newly exposed hole.

Cheers,

James

Except the starter motor is solenoid actuated and not an inertia bendix system..

the bendix is the gear that engages with the ring gear
