Mom-of-two survives 50km 'wrong way' on freeway

September 3, 2004

London, England - An inebriated Welsh woman drove 50km the wrong way along one of the country's busiest motorways while bemused that hundreds of cars and trucks travelling in the opposite direction could all be so silly.

The Times reported that Rebecca Denton, 37, decided to visit a seaside resort during a night out with a friend from a psychiatric hospital, Swansea Crown Court heard.

The mother of two set a record for the furthest distance driven on the wrong side of a British motorway - which would have been even longer if she had not run out of road.

Judge John Diehl banned her from driving for five years and said: "It is truly miraculous that nobody was killed or injured

The court heard how Denton, after collecting Martine Williams from the psychiatric hospital in Pontypridd, south Wales and spending time drinking in Cardiff, spontaneously set off on a trip to Tenby, about 130km away.

She drove for 30km on the correct carriageway before stopping at a service station then rejoining the M4 through the entrance instead of the exit and moving into the middle of the three lanes to cruise at 130km/h in the wrong direction.

Her Toyota Celica would have collided with a fuel tanker but its driver, Mark Thorpe, swerved on to the hard shoulder and called the police - who set off in pursuit but didn't catch Denton until she was nearly back in Swansea.

The raced alongside (but in the correct carriageway) and signalled her to stop but Williams merely waved at the cops and the chase continued until police pulled ahead and laid a "stinger" across the road to blow her tyres

Prosecuting counsel Paul Hobson said Denton was "heavily intoxicated", refused to provide a breath sample when arrested at 1.40am and told the police she thought the other drivers were in the wrong.

Denton's lawyer said she had a history of depression and had not been taking her medication.

The judge decided Denton needed help and that prison would not address the real problem. - Sapa-DPA

should be a life ban, theres obviously something wrong with her. to be drunk enough to assume everyone else was going the wrong way, you would be unconcious. Normal people wouldnt even think that everyone else could be wrong.

'ang em...
