Edinburgh - getting about??
Morning, we are off to Edinburgh at the weekend to look at Uni with daughter. Got travel sorted to get there n back, but what's the best way of
getting about town once there ??

Do you know which areas you HAVE to visit during your stay?
If they're not too far apart, then I'd always recommend shanks-pony!
It's a lovely city and worth exploring on foot.

Staying about 5 miles out but train is cheap so good.
Is it worth getting a day travel bus ticket/ wanderer type thing if they do it?
Can you recommend anywhere not to miss, never been to city before, been past on way to knock hill a few times but never into it??

Just been there this week! We drove around city centre but traffic is dire, roadworks all over the place & parking is very limited, mainly pay
& display at side of road.
The hop on hop off bus tours are valid for 24hours so might be a useful way of doing a tour & providing transport at the same time. The Zoo is
good, only place in UK you can see giant pandas, koalas & several other rare species (pandas have to be booked in advance tho' no extra
cost). Would have to say the absolute don't miss is the castle, & the views of it from Princes street gardens are pretty impressive - castle
itself is an amazing building & very interesting - an awful lot of the rest of the tourist attractions are "manufactured tourism"
which we weren't bothered about seeing.
Something we did struggle with was finding decent pub grub in the evenings, couldn't find much at all, perhaps a google search might reveal a
weatherspoons or similar. You don't say if you're there for one day or 2 so may not be applicable!
I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator

Cheers russbost, hopper bus sounds good, will be there a couple of days so will certainly get to the castle.
Wife exchanged Tesco club card points for Bella Italian/Cafe Rouge vouchers so that's what it will be at night, will do a search for lunch pub
grub then.
Unless one of our Scottish locosters recommends somewhere?????

I lived there for 3 years as a student & go back regularly with work. It's a great city, use your feet around the centre, it's not
that big & well worth it. There's loads of good places to eat but Red Squirrel on Lothian road, just off Princes st is great for quality
burgers & beer.

There is a Wetherspoons in the centre of the town.
The Standing Order, just behind Princes Street in George Street.

You can get a day saver on the LRT buses which is worth it if you are getting more than about three buses that day. you'll need a bus from
Waverley or Haymarket up to Craiglockart (Napier? I got my BEng at Napier) most other places are easily walkable from the centre of town, apart from
the Zoo which is fair hike

There is also a tequilas near the wether spoons! Was up there earlier this year to take my son to see the aforementioned koalas!!!! Second the city
centre parking nightmare! Bus is most definitely the way ahead!

craig lockhart is a few min on the bus, eveything else is easy walking distance from waverly station
Bella Italian/Cafe Rouge and Strada are all in the new town (castle street / Frederick Street) about 5-10 mins walk from the train
as far as pubs go there are plenty around george street (inc. 2 Wetherspoons), but they aren't the cheap ones, the old town (around the royal
mile / grass market) can be a bit cheaper and have a bit more character
