Price check on engine strip repair n rebuild for mazda 6 diesel PLEASE VOTE
So I finally had my bill for my car repair.
Took my tin top out on Sunday to blyton track and on the way home the oil light started to flicker. Fenced the oil level n it seemed ok....
Soooooooo when I got home I looked into reasons why it flickers....
Well it turns out it is oil starvation due to a blocked strainer on the pick up pipes.....
So I just decided strip the sump down n check it. Yup the oil strainer was blocked so much you couldn't shine a torch through it....
So I rebuilt the car after cleaning up..... I filled it with oil n new filter n started it....
Well put it this way it was damaged....
Crank was knocking like he'll so I got it taken to the garage.
Well they stated the crank is fooked which I caused by the bearings being damaged.
So they have skimmed the head, new timing belt, new rings n gaskets etc, new crankshaft. The bill is £1500 inc labour. Oh n oil etc.
What's your thoughts...
Comes with 6 months warranty.

Wouldn't have said that was outrageous for quite extensive engine work on a modern car tbh - I dread to think how much a new crank would be on
it's own!

New crank was £370
Timing belt kit £80
Oil £50
I didn't think it was too ad but I wanted a second opinion to make me feel better lol

The independents round here charge £60 per hour labour, that soon adds up

If you want to know if its priced ok, then just price up a new engine and add a suitable amount to fit same.
A quick search showed up between £1500 and £1700, just for the engine.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

At least £1000 under what the dealers would charge.
Extended service intervals and non-fully synthetic oils just don't mix particularly in turbo diesel.
Best to always use a decent quality synthetic and devided the manufacturers oil change interval by 2.

My Mazda6 diesel is due it's 75,000 mile service which includes a cambelt swap. That'll be £750 according to the local dealer.

£1000 for an engine strip and rebuild just for labour is entirely not unreasonable, so it sounds about right!

Put it another way, if I quickly add up how much it would cost on parts, based on the few engines I've rebuilt over the past years and about
£40/hour labour, I'd want more then what you've paid!!

Makes me feel lucky, when the timing belt on my vivaro snapped, my usual guy rebuilt the engine for about £250 labour, £450 parts. IIRC that was 8
valves, and possibly 2 pistons too, the belt, new pulley, etc.
Clutch on an a6 2.7t was £500 including a replacement flywheel.
You would expect some warning that the bill was getting that high though, you dont want that one coming out of the blue and i cant believe any garage
would undertake the work without giving you some warning..

I did one recently and it was around that mark . I had a mobile guy come and delete the dpf and re Map the ecu which transformed the car plus it stops
all the re gen nonsense that is a very common issue with these Mazda diesels . Seen a few Mazda 6 diesels with crank issues the one I rebuilt was well
maintained and fairly low mileage

It also might be worth getting the sump dropped and the oil pick-up strainer cleaned in thinners.
