Help with a problem in the gear box Region
When i am driving the Indy there is no noise BUT when i lift off the throttle there is a tapping / rattle coming from the drive train.
I have had all the rear axle / diff to bits and cant find anything wrong there
So the next thing is the engine OUT to check the clutch and the gear box.
What are peoples opinions on what it could be.
In put shaft or bearing
clutch / plate
thrust bearing
Any help would be gratefully received
This noise has been going on for about 4 years or more and getting worse
The engine is a 2L pinto and type 9 gear box

Did you leave your old socket set on top of the gearbox?

Are you sure it's not just the engine moving on it's mounts and causing the gearbox to touch the chassis?

I am as sure as i can be i have a engine steady on it and i can't find any rubbing any where

Are the UJ's on the propshaft healthy?

Yes i have checked and had a good look at them
In my mind i think it could be the clutch as when i dip the clutch when it makes the noise it stops the rattle ,
Also the gear box cogs would still be going round the only thing could it be the input shaft ?
I must get this sorted as its making me feel like not using the car

Dip clut h and noise goes away could be clutch bearing

As the noise goes when you engage the clutch I'd be inclined to agree with snapper, although if it were the bearing I would expect a whine more
so than a rattle!

No its a banging / rattle could the springs in the clutch plate broke and make this noise ?
IT looks like the engine is coming out More expense on new parts
Please keep the info coming has anyone else had this happen

is it the clutch arm rattling? does it go away when you rest your foot on the clutch pedal (but not fully depressed)?
if so all you need is a spring on the pedal to add a little tension.

Good question i don't know with out trying it i will have to try it tomorrow night if i get time

With the type 9 you can pull the rubber clutch arm boot aside and shine a torch in there, will need a mirror though. You do need a bit of tension in
the cable as the arm will just rattle around as it simply pivots on a sloppy T shaped pin. Even just grabbing the arm and shaking it should produce no
movement
This was a picture I took of mine through the bellhousing hole when I was mucking around with the arm design

Bump still looking for the answer the engine is out and i can't find anything wrong

Well the engine and gearbox is out i can't find anything wrong with the clutch but to be on the safe side i have ordered a new one
And as the gearbox mounting looks week i have ordered a mk1/2 cortina mount i am grasping at straws with this one
