Asbestos Question
How would I know if a house contains asbestos?
Where in a house has it been typically used?

It could be anywhere! walls, ceiling, lagged pipes etc.
If you are concerned then best to get it checked professionally.

Roofing materials, plaster board to name but 2.
Depends on the age of the house.
You can get tests done, but I think its something that needs to be take to a lab to be processed.

It's safe to assume they'll be some in any house built until the early 80s.
It's even in Artex !

Did some research on this a while back. There is a long post on here somewhere about it. I found Abestos floor tiles under a existing floor in my
house. Apparently some abestos is worse than others. The stuff that floats in the air is the bad stuff. Apparently floor tiles aren't so
dangerous as long as you don't sand them.

Electric nightstore heaters contain lots. Much asbestos is fine if you leave it undisturbed.

So true. Got stung on this when selling my last house (built in the 80s). Got an independent tester in who said this is the 'next big
thing' for lazy surveyors who say 'there may be asbestos present'. It will be present (in every ceiling in our example) but for the
most part it won't be a problem as long as it is covered and not breaking up.

In my fifties built house we had
1. A shed roof
2. The cold water storage tank for the heating system
3. Air vents in the bathrooms
4. Chimney liners (only found out when doing building work.)

Did we do doors yet? had an external-ish one (between house and garage) that had an asbestos sheet nailed to the back of it as insulation.

My lovely 50's bungalow has it everywhere mentioned so far, but also the soffits and other external cladding. Seriously large soil pipes too,
above and below ground. The recycling centre in Salisbury was happy to take the section that I'd had to replace.
About the only thing that I can say doesn't probably contain the stuff is the gorgeous woodchip wallpaper modern decoration(probably
70-80's?).

I've commissioned quite a few Asbestos surveys on commercial buildings lately where the equivalent of what you probably need is a management
survey.
I'm not sure how this translates to domestic property but due to lots of competition in the market they are not that expensive, particularly
given that if not managed appriately, asbsestos does present a genuine risk to life.
As others have said it could be almost anywhere, even in quite recent buildings. If you do find some its not neccarsarily a problem, you just need
know its there when you use the building.

There's quite a lot of info on the internet and its worth a look.
Some forms of asbestos are ok but others are not.
Basically as long as you don't start drilling or grinding into it there's only a low risk.
We have had a lot of it encapsulated (painted over with a solution) at work and its harmless if left alone.
Some house for sale details contain the phrase 'other materials' and that should set the alarm bells ringing...
Iirc they still mine Asbestos in Russia and its the worlds largest producer.
