205 project and hullo!

Hi folks, stumbled across this place through PH and I'm liking what I see. Some fantastic builds.

I'm hoping you can all lend me sum inspiration. I have a 205 td which I'm about to strip to a shell and I'm at a loss as to what to do with it. I'd like mid mounted or 4wd or bec, something fairly different and fun for track and road. So what do you think I should do?

Initial thoughts were to rebody a 986 Boxster, get the handling right out the box. Bit heavy though.

Or, go down the bec route, as light as possible and custom rear suspension in a frame.

Here's the beast in question :

I come from a toyota background, mechanic and can weld so pretty happy to have a go at just about anything. Have a 964 for the more grown up stuff so this can be as raw and fun as possible.

Cheers,
Olie

Get a modern Pug diesel and chuck that in and "chip" it. Lighten as much as poss, lower it a little. If you can get weight down to lowest prod model of around 750kg, with 175bhp diesel, that'd be 233bhp/tonne - Sierra Cosworth was 160 ish

1.9 GTI had 130 bhp ish, should be able to do much better with a modern diesel - poss 160 - 175.

And you'll get 50mpg when in traffic - being most of the time

And welcome to the forum

I've got a set of rallye arches to go on it.

So what do I put in it then? Diesel wouldn't do it for me, im a big noise fan.

Mid engined, audi 1.8turbo, with audi trasaxle?

What do going to do with it? If its a track car only, all good
If its going on the road, you're really kinda stuck with just an engine swap. cutting of the chassis and floor should mean an IVA test is needed, but whether you do or not...

I do have an audi ob1 gearbox in the garage but I don't think itd suit the short wheelbase going longitudinal with 6 or 8 cylinders.

Transverse, revvy, noisy and suited to a light car. Are the bike lumps and transaxles expensive to use? That does sound ridiculous fun.

I'd be hoping to Iva the car. If it was track only it'd be a seven a like.

if ever I got another 205 shell I would, without hesitation, use a celica st185 as a donor and make it 300hp 4wd. just shorten the prop and jam the rest in.

your call but IMO nothing would fit better. S/C not my favourite solution for forced induction any time but you could scrap the tubby and fit an Eaton pretty easily. 3sgte is about the best engine Toyota makes (made), not sure what you can have against it but your call!

325 n/a? in what car?

Any 4wd boxes available for it? Not sure there's much point putting all that through 2 up front?

Theres several running in mr2s putting out that with a set of manifolds and induction kit.

They use the e153 box on the conversion so you could use the full gt4 setup. Then theres the sc on top, as in the exige v6.

Look at monkey wrench racing for what can be had from one.

T16 kitted bodyshell, Impreza turbo engine and gearbox converted to mid engined spec, antilag and launch control activated ECU.

About 10cm difference in the wheelbase of the 205 and a Scooby WRX. Pick one of those up for £2k, body transplant, job done...

Hi nice to see someone thinking out of the box with a 205 instead of just sticking in an mi16 lump in , my 1.9 gti has the standard engine in but is supercharged running 190bhp / 186 ft/lb of torque which in a car that only weighs 760kg makes it very lively

I had an mi16 about 8 years ago. 1.6 box with the mi final drive. Loved it and I will have another but because this is just a good td shell then I'd like it to be different.

Doesn't have to be massively competent, just fun.

Did some measuring this afternoon.

< br />

So thats 1150mm rear panel to rear of the tape reel.

1100mm between wheel wells.

The rubber gromit is 660mm from the rear.

Why those dimensions? Well it just so happens thats the length of an Audi v8 plus ob1 gearbox I have sat in the garage. Driveshafts would just about line up but not running straight, which is good.

So my thoughts are now turning to put an a8 subframe, struts and towers in the rear. Engine and box would sit in them and just need grafted to the shell.

Sounds easy eh?

Purchased a mk1 eunos 1.8 today, going to break the body, interior, hardtop and then fit the running gear to the 205.

I think this will work well. I've looked before and I'm pretty sure the MX5 rear sub frame will fit under the 205 shell without massive modification. Not looked in great detail at the front subframe, but it's got to be possible without too much trouble.

Keep us updated and plenty of photos

205 - 2420 wheelbase, 1382 front, 1339 rear.

Mx5 - 2265 wheelbase, 1410 front, 1427 rear

Wheelbase might require a lengthened prop shaft, rest of it should be fine with my rallye arch kit.

So that gives me 155mm extra length on the wheelbase which means more engine bay room.

Have pm'd Clairetoo about a v6 kit but what else could we fit onto the mx5 gearbox?
