Type E gearbox Strip

Morning folks,

I want to remove everything from inside my type e gearbox with the exception of 3rd, 4th and reverse. I am aware that the reverse gear is ran off the 1st & 2nd hub but i am prepared to stick the gear cluster in the lathe and machine the shaft so only the reverse drive is present. My question is (without stripping my box down i don't yet know) would it be possible to literally just remove everything relating to 1st & 2nd, keep the reverse bits and just spacer them up on the shaft to suit?

Thanks
