If it's always been a race / track car then why would it have a chassis number?

write to the dvla with a covering letter requesting a chassis number. Make sure you read the IVA manual for position of number on chassis and size of characters

No,

Some manufactures issue there chassis with a number some do not and of coarse a home built chassis wouldn't have one unless applied for.

the chassis is a pro built one cant remember of the top of my head who built it. It was used in the 750mc race series. the previous owner fitted the red top.

So its possible that there maybe a chassis number as its a pro built chassis but if not then I would have to apply for one.

Or as above am I allowed to make up my own chassis number???

I will have more info on Monday when the car gets hear and all paperwork should be hear by then as it was sent in the post by previous owner.

Cheers jon

At xmas local Dvla offices closed and its now all done at Swansea.

Before that some local offices would let you make your own and some would insist on issuing you with one.

If the chassis was built for racing I would doubt it has a chassis number and even if it has the Dvla are not forced to accept it.

With it all changing you maybe on fresh ground as far as info goes.

its going to be a while until I need numbers sorting out. I was just curious as if it had been on the road previously then it would not need the iva test.

There will be plenty of questions coming on various topics so I look forward to members help.

Cheers jon

If it had been tested and registered previously then that would have been a huge selling point and could double the value.

before asking for a new chassis number /vin, do a really thorough search of chassis and body to ensure there isnt one, - having 2 different vin is not good.

I would say on the drivers door 'shut' but without doors its unlikely, but near there on the floor/side-body would be likely, as would any engine bay 'struts'

edit:
the 'statutory plates' are additional to the vin on chassis/body
