Roughen and etch primer??

That's all I have ever done, however, some polished stainless has a clear coating applied to it, you need to remove this before painting.

Don't do what i did... used a wire wheel brush to roughen it up and appear to have gone a bit far. Not got round to painting yet, but now have some SS panels that rust quite quickly!

You probably used an old wheel that had previously been used on carbon steel. Stainless needs dedicated tooling otherwise that will happen.

As for paint prep, you dont need to treat stainless any different that you would carbon steel.
