Insensitive TomTom

My Tomtom takes about 15 minutes to find the satellites on switch on. Once it has found them, it will work for an hour or so, then gets confused about where it is and eventually drops out. I've updated via Tomtom Home but it seems no better.
Is it a bin job ?

I'd love to give my imaginary friend a great big hug,

but this jacket makes it impossible.

It's the same car it has always worked in. But yes, I've tried it outside too.

Funnily enough, my Tom Tom has done the similar thing a few days ago, its a 4 yr old XL model, it would not pick up any satelites at all. I updated the software but it made no difference. Then did a hard reset (turn off and hold button for 10-15 seconds till it boots up again) then it worked OK. It does take 1-2 minutes to pick up the satelites sometimes but this solution worked.

Why do they call Port Harcourt "The Garden City"?...... Becauase they can't spell Stramash.

I thought this was going to be about a "voice" you'd loaded onto it, that called you a "stupid old bastard" or similar when you missed a turning.

On a more helpful track... What maps do you have loaded. The latest maps take up a lot more memory than the ones it probably had originally. If it's got full Euro maps, could you swap to just UK map to reduce the size?

My parents have just found that their one is doing the same thing, more or less, it starts to lose them after about an hour and the reported speed sticks for minutes at a time. Updated, latest everything.

I think they're planning to complain about it but I'm not sure what the cause is.

Bit the bullet and got a new one. TomTom XL
It seems to work ok But -The 3D display shows where you are going to at the top of the screen which is logical. But the 2D display, which I prefer and am used to, shows where I've been at the top of the screen and destination at the bottom. This, to me, is completely counter-intuitive as what looks like a right turn is actually a left and vice versa
Going back to Halfords tomorrow to see if they can advise.

Just not what my wife once said :-

'Turn left....... no the other left!' I was apparently meant to go right.

Do you update your TomTom regularly? This involves plugging it into a PC and running a program called TomTom Home (or the other program TomTom has for different models). You can download this from the TomTom website.

Amongst other things it downloads an update of satellite positions, which means that the satnav can get a fix quicker.

Or ditch Tom Tom in favour of a new Garmin, this is what I did last year and have never looked back.

Well that didn't go well
Went back to Halfords to check and the guy I bought the XL from said that's right - " the 2D display always has North at the top and doesn't rotate like the 3D display does. I always recommend a Garmin which has more options "

so I said -----

" Why tf didn't you tell me that when I bought the XL from you yesterday ??? "

and he said ----

" It's all down to personal choice innit. You're the first person to complain "

I had a Garmin for years, then got the new Espace (which I love) that came fitted with a TomTom and it's absolute shite in comparison. Eg, coming back from Wales down the M4 towards the M25, it wanted us to take a B road that cut off the corner so we ignored it, then it told us to turn around at the next junction, then did it again and once we were on the M25, corrected itself. Does this sort of thing frequently. And once you set a route it take 5 mins to tell you the way because it so slow at calculating things. Tom Tom useless imho

Nowt else to say really

You should be able to tell it to take the fastest route. or the shortest ( not at all the same thing )
