Race Kit

Hi all,

Looks like I might get the chance of a shared drive on some sprints and hill climbs this year in a Caterham.

So I'm gonna need a flame retardant race suit, boots and a helmet.

Happy with secondhand suit, 5'6 , 10st 10lb , 30" waist, any colour. Anyone got anything?

Boots Size 7 or 7.5 if had VERY little use (you wouldn't want mine after six outings).

Or

Where is the best place to buy new / deals??

Hoping to go circuit racing in 2017, so which helmet would be a good buy without spending a fortune?
I do understand that you should buy the best you can afford but most expensive is not always best...

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
Wombat

You will also need a HANS, another £250 notes and very little second hand stuff.

I went for a Hedtec helmet for a sprint last year. Good value, well made and comfy. Got a second hand suit and boots from ebay. They're about if you keep looking.

Suit and boots were about £160 if I remember and only been worn once or twice each.

I'd recommend buying a new helmet. Second hand could've been dropped or crashed.

You'll need gloves too.

Copied from the Blue Book.

Drivers

9.2.1. Throughout practice and Competition, upon
exiting from and until returning to the Paddock, when
the driver is seated in the vehicle he must wear
clothing, helmet and goggles complying with K.9 to 11
or, where appropriate, the specific Class regulations for
Drag Races. Overalls homologated to either FIA 8856-
2000 or FIA 1986 standard are mandatory. Competitors
are required to wear flame-resistant gloves (K.14.3(e)).

An FIA approved FHR device, fitted in accordance with
FIA regulations is mandatory for all drivers with the
exception of Period Defined Vehicles, Road-going
Series Production Cars and Road-going Specialist
Production Cars.

All these items must be produced for inspection and
approval at scrutineering

What class are you running in? That'll define whether you need an FHR.

Might be able to help with the Helmet if you're staying in road going.

If you are entering the Caterham in Road Going Specialist Production Cars then no FHR is required. If you are entering it in any other class then you will need a FHR.

You do not, strangely, require fireproof boots.

Google AWS Racewear, Ashford, Kent or call 01233 638498 for good quality racewear at
reasonable prices. They supply many of the Marshalls overalls etc. I've found them very good.

Ah ok. Well I have a hardly used Sparco lid that I need to change this year as I need An FHR.

No HANS posts though, so depends how long you want it to last I guess!

Cheers guys, watching a few suits on eBay and some boots.
Going to go for a new helmet with Hans Posts fitted so future proofed.
Just need to find somewhere local ish to try them on.
Always wanted a Bell when I was long circuit karting but wore glasses then and couldn't get a comfy fit.
Contacts now so should give some options.
