They are heavy but I cant see how they could weigh much different to a Vauxhall XE or a Ford Zetec..........

They're ALL heavy!!!!.

Rover 'K' series should be light as its all ally, and probably the old crossflow is a smaller lighter engine.

But I wouldnt like to carry any of 'em!!........

fluke motorsport i think it is has a section on their website with weights of various engine and transmission combo's on it's site.

basically 2ltr iron blocks are heavy (pinto, zetec, xe), rover v8 is not much more as it's ally but it is large so is heaviest that i know of amongst common choices. zetec se, 4age, duratec, k series are light alloy block engines with small iron block xflow inbetween.

so something like (roughly in order of weight, heaviest first with ancillaries):

ford essex v6
ford cologne v6
rover v8/duratec v6/ford sierra dohc
pinto/zetec/xe
cvh
xflow
duratec/zetec se/k-series/4age

bob,

i think the short engine is the same, but by the time you add ancillaries, two exhaust headers etc etc it then weighs more. didn't chrisg weigh some engines at a scrappy a while back?

Ned.

Engine Weight

Hi

According to Which Kit these are the weights of the most common 4 pots fully dressed.

Crossflow 110 kgs
Pinto 135 kgs
Zetec 115 kgs
Zetec SE ( all alloy found in the later focus & fiesta & only 1.6 & 1.25) 81 kgs
Duratec 97 kgs
Vauxhall XE 120 kgs
Rover K series 100 kgs
Toyata 4-AGE 100 kgs

Another point to note is that the K Series is the only engine that can be installed in a 7 type car with out any modifiaction to the standard plenum /injection system.

The Rover K is a fair bit lighter than 100kg dressed ---The engines is light not just because of the alloy block and head but because every single component on the engine is designed for minium weight, for example the inlet manifold and throttlebody weighs about 1/3 that of an XFlo GT carb and manifold, the clutch and flywheel are about half the weight of the equivalent xflo 1600 unit, and as the coolant capacity is a fair bit less that saves a few pounds.

With the RV is it easy to forget that it also requires two exhaust systems, more fuel bigger battery and more that all add to the weight.

Just a thought - did any of you see the Worlds Strongest Man competition over the Christmas break?

They were doing the 'Farmers Walk' basically a large weight in each hand and doing a 30m dash!

The weight in EACH hand was 160kg - or a RV8 fully dressed in each hand - now that makes it slightly MORE impressive!

1600k series with flywheel, injection gubbins, alternator, coilpack, leads and oil filter is a touch over the 82kg mark. Its less than 90 with the clutch and 4-1 exhaust on.

Just for info,

RV8 is 144.5 kg. So obviously NOT lighter than the Pinto as I stated in another thread.

Cheers, Rorty.
