Return to the beasty - Grade of steel for body floor?

Hi all,

Returning to the project after a long break. Kids followed by redundancy really bolloxed the time plan!

So, my original kit was suppluesd to fit over the bulkhead and bidy floor of a discovery. Both of my donor vehicles were well rotton, and ince I saw it n the flesh I wasn't so happy about building it this way. So I now have a substantial body to add a floor and bulkhead to. I'll probably use box section rather than tube, but what grade? Can any merseysiders recommend suppliers?

Cheers!

I'm not 100% clear on what you're asking with the reference to a discovery.

If you want to know what thickness steel for the floor then my agonizing came up with the following (about 20 years ago so i could get the facts wrong)

1.2mm steel (this bit i'm certain on).

Its got (compared to aluminum) a lot more resistance to penetration if you run something over and it tries to come through the floor. Its not much heavier than 3mm aluminimum which most people use, you can weld it so get a better connection to the chassis and strengthens it. The weight is 'low down' enhancing handling (i'm stretching the point here).

Now ask me what I drive? a Caterham with about 1.5mm aluminum floor and reinforcing sections for the seats - built 20 or so years ago. Caterham now fit thicker aluminium.
