The demise of tv recording boxes O/T
Evening all.
I switched to virgin from sky and was shocked to find they don't do recording boxes any more. All streaming, so you can't watch slow til
it's finished if you've missed the beginning. What a massive L. So what are you all doing to watch TV shows these days? Sticking with the
old box whilst it still works, or getting a stand alone recording box? I'm in the process of trying to reactivate my old sky gear...

Similar to Mr fish, I used serviio and newsgroups. I also have Disney, prime and netflix through various random reasons, but I'm so fed up of the
streaming 'service' that I've gone back to sailing the seven seas. So many times we've got to episode 7 out of 8, and the series
has been dropped. Or the adverts are so frequent and repetitive that we've had to turn off the streaming service and switch to a downloaded copy.
Mostly it's because the services are so fragmented that even having the 'big three' doesn't guarantee access to everything. They
all wanted a piece of the streaming pie, not realising most people will only pay for one or two at most (excluding the TV licence of course)

Still got a standalone recorder box under the TV.
Haven't used it in donkey's years (not even sure if it still works).
It's probably full of kids stuff from when they were kids.
Stream stuff 99% of the time.
I assume the terrestrial channels still work, but not even sure what's on them.

Do people still watch TV? Can't be bothered with it anymore, I stream films and watch stuff on youtube occasionally. Literally nothing on TV ever
appeals anymore.

I still use my hard drive recorder to "tape" the live BTCC sunday broadcasts on ITV4 so I can fast forward through all the adverts and
filling chat and just watch the races - condenses 6.5 hrs into about 2hrs. Similar for the highlights shows for BSB, MotoGP, WSBK, WRC and F1 on
Quest, C4 etc that are still broadcast on free tv channels. I have a low tolerance for adverts so get tetchy if I can't skip them so get annoyed
with streaming and I'm too tight to pay the subscription for the ad free versions!

I'm exactly the same. I watch twitch a bit but wouldn't even have a telly if I lived alone.

I do not stream much at all - I'm fed up with all the adverts so I use a freesat 4k recorder box that will record up to 4? 5? channels at a time
then watch them and wiz through the adverts, brilliant. The government has just published a white paper saying it will switch off Freeview in 2034 and
has said freesat will go some time before. Streaming may be ok if you have broadband. We have a caravan and rely on an aerial when touring especially
some sites where there is no phone signal. There is a petition against freeview shut down at https://c.org/cpDbZfXTHp that has reached over 150000
signatures in a very short time if you fancy a look

Firstly Nord VPN, stay safe.
Then a browser to look up 1337X, piratebay, EZTVX (but you can't access this from UK, hence Nord and log into it from USA) and YTS. then
you'll need a download client, I use Tixati. I also find handbrake useful as I can then convert the files into more useable (and smaller)
formats.

Currently I run a 55" flat screen through surround sound box connected to Freesat, movies I am REALLY interested in I might buy when they come
out (9 large boxes of DVD's and about the same amount on shelves, then I have about 4,000 films on hard drives that I can just watch as the fancy
takes me plus another hard drive of recorded TV shows (about 4Tb worth). I did use to have A Virgin BOX, but, where I live now there are NO hard phone
cables or internet cables allowed on site and free to air TV reception is a bit naff, so its a satelite dish and box for me and mobile phone sim card
based internet (good reception mostly for that) and that is approximately £14/month for unlimited downloads, which means that should I wish to, I can
internet connect my smart TV to various services should I want to pay for them (mostly I don't).

Personally, I was watching almost no live tv
so gave up on any TV licence, or paid subscription to live sport.
if I want to watch the F1, I can pop round the corner to the pub and watch it there... or wait for the youtube sky highlights later.
someone did suggest going to the pub to watch has it's own costs, but I replied, yea, but I might be there anyway ;-)

actually sat in the afternoon sun in the garden, chatting with people ;-)

Cheers folks! I did the boring thing, ditched the virgin and went back to sky with my old boxes reactivated. Plus they actually went in cheaper than
what they offered when I said I was leaving 🙄
