firblade missfire not runiing right

hi guys
i need help with the running of the engine,
itseems to run rich .

first of all i bought new plugs yesterday put them in today ,took the car out done about 4 miles then started coughing missfireing and kept cutting out ,got it home just .

took the plugs out they look jet black ,plus i got black soot on the rear arch

ive had the carbs apart ,and was told to try changing the following

main jets changed to (28)
screwed in the mixture screws x 4 and backed them of 3 turns .
scronised the carbs so they have the same air running through.
plus i had put in new plugs .

as i say i ran it for 4 miles and got excactly the same problem.

i have pulled each spark plug lead of and each would makes a difference when taken off i.e it will missfire . APART FROM NUMBER 4 ,i can hear the spark from the lead and put a nother spark plug in number 4 still the same .

i am thinking maybe its a sticking valve in the head ,but why did it run perfect with the new plugs in it (only 4 miles )

im now stuck not sure what to check next .

im sure its something to do with no 4 cylinder as nothing much happened when i take the lead off .

i think i do need to get it rolloing rd tested ,but it runs so bad i would have to trailer it there .

any ideas
many thanks
simon

sorry about the long winded

Is your regulator/rectifier alright - sounds as though it's pointing to that to me

im not sure how you check the rectifier but i thought it was playing around a month ago cutting out ect .
i changed it for a uprated one with the fins on it also put a small fan on top.

although the rectifier still gets hot .

Where have you got the Rectifier sited? At the front - plenty of airflow...

If it's not the Rectifier I'd start looking at mixture's it doesn't sound at all right. Was the engine alright before you put it into the car?

Can't help you much more than I have without seeing it... sorry!

I'd swap components around with someone's who you know is alright until it sorts it out...

I have just had a problem that sounds like it might be similar, my blade would not run very well when under load and when above 7k it would misfire like mad.

It turned out to be the coils. Got a new set from my local bike shop and engine now runs perfectly

Don't know how you can check them without a spare set though

Cheers

Jim

Worth trying a compression test in case you have some valves sticking on #4.

Any unburnt fuel in #4? What is the condition of the plug, wet?

Without any load its possible for the engine to run pretty much the same with only 3 cylinders, but under load you'd notice #4 if it wasn't doing anything.
