Advice please!

OK was driving home last night, Seat Leon Cupra, about 30mph not accelerating, straight road, all of a sudden i hear a huge bang then twanging sound.
It sounded to me like a bolt under tension had snapped, after a quick road side inspection i couldnt see anything obvious, the steering seemed fine no knocking or loseness, the suspension seemed fine so i continuned home which was only about a mile.
when i got home, i have to turn full lock to get on my drive and heard a straining type noise.

What do you think, snapped bolt on the track rod ends, ball joint? as i said the steering and suspension seemed fine.

Gonna buy some axles stands from halfords today so i can get it up and have a proper look tonight.

Could it be a bushing of some kind that has popped out of the front suspension?

only a thought.

Hi Gav!

I have a Cupra as does a guy at work. He has recently had to have his rear brakes overhauled (under warranty) as the rear pads were binding on one side. The handbrake cable was replaced as part of the work.

One of the symptoms was a sound groaning/rumbling sound like a worn wheel bearing when cornering on that side.

The Seat dealer commented that they have seen the problem several times before, so I have booked mine in for a check as it is the same age as his (both company cars).

The bang sound you heard may have been the handbrake cable pinging loose.

Might be worth a look!

Ive been away for work and my car's been stood for 3 days in the rain so that might of been a factor.

As a side note have you got your's revo'd?

does that car have anti roll bars/drop links? a drop link failing might do something similar at a guess?! if you wre driving slowly it wouldn't affect the steering, apart from on full lock perhaps.

No anti roll bar as std iirc although ill have to check.

Thinking about it now, i dont think it would of been the brake cable pining lose as it really was an almighty thud then twang, although fingers crossed this is what it is, rather that than a failure of a bolt.

Their was a small flat pile of tarmac that i might of driven over but i discounted this by the sound of the noise, i doubt it would of made that much noise at 30mph.
still may be a possibility

I am not too sure how the suspension is on the Leon although it does sound very much like the symptoms a broken drop link would give. Had a similar thing happen on an old cavalier!

...or a coil spring snapping. I had that happen on a Golf, no significant change in handling, but the symptoms were similar to yours.

Must admit arb drop link sounds a favourite

The last huge bang I had Phnaaar Phnaaar
was when my Mondeo diff self destructed, was OK on the straight but made nasty noises whilst turning

Revo'd?

No

It's a TDI Cupra, not petrol and being a company car we're not allowed to do ANYTHING to them

We don't even get a choice of tyres, we have to have the Dunlop ones specified by the lease company

But then I'm not paying for them so mustn't grumble

....as long as they don't find out.

I know plenty of people that have modified company cars without anyone finding out. Years ago I heard about someone who ran an MG Montego Turbo which had been registered as a Vanden Plas as the company did not allow the "sports" variants, but the users sourced cars themselves - the guy had a helpful dealer supply his car

Just nipped down to halford and got a jack and axle stands for £20 which seemed a bit cheap!

ill get it jacked uptonight and take a better look, i had another look best i could and i could see the drop link was fine and couldnt see anything else wrong, ill take a closer look at the springs tonight

I have thought about it - having it chipped is quite an obvious option. But seeing that I've already had to make 3 insurance claims in the 18 months I've had it I think I'd best not mess about with it any more.

I had a bush on an anti-roll bar snap once. Sounds familiar, sound of something snapping under tension and no noticable difference in handling. A quick check revealed nothing, but found it once it was on the ramps. Cheap enough to repair too.





A bit of slapstick never hurt anyone.

OK found it!

once i got the front jacked up, the last 4 inch of the coil spring had snapped and was pointing in a quite nasty direction towards the tyre!
only needed anoother 3 inch of movement and would of gone right through the tyre :S
good job it happened where it did and not doing 80 on the motorway!

So anyone got an idea where i can buy a new coil spring from for a seat leon cupra?

sorry to hear that Gav - but at least you found it out at a sensible speed !

Just remember any springs should be done as pairs mate.

if you need some spring compressors have a pair what i could drop off.

have you tried the car shop in lower darwen.

Glad you found the problem. Out of interest what age/mileage is your Leon and is the broken spring an original one?

Its an X plate 2000.
80k is the mileage and the spring that went was the drivers front and as far as im aware and juging by the light surface rust it is the original.
