V6 Dimensions

I think somebody was looking for engine sizes, here are some for a Alfa v6

Height from bottom of sump to top of Plenum Chamber = 640mm

Width across Cylinder head banks = 540mm

Lenght including distributer cap=710mm
(See pics)


Total weight (dry),no manifolds,alternator etc = 138kgs

Out put 192 BHP

Do you have dimensions for it with a front wheel drive gearbox fitted?

An Alfa V6 is a possibility for my mid engined project, and the critical dimension for me is from crank pully to the end of the fwd gearbox, that will be the minimum width of my engine bay if I go transverse with that engine.

At the moment, I've allowed roughly a metre but that may not be enough!

Is that the 24V or th 12V version?

Alfa v6

The engine I have was removed from a automatic, but it was taken from a 164 so the manual would be very similar as the engine and gearbox mounting points used are the same.
The total length from the crankpully to the rear of the gearbox (automatic) is 990mm
560mm+430mm(enine+gearbox)
Not much room for error!!

This is the sizes for a 12valve engine the only possible difrence for the 24v would be the height as the block used is the same.

Alfa v6

I should of added that i changed the sump and used the oil pump and sump pan from a alfa 75 2.5v6
This reduces the sump depth by about 50mm.

Back to the drawing board (CAD Software) car will have to be wider!

Remember that the exhaust headers may add to the width!

A big issue for a Locoster is not so much "how wide is the engine" but "how much room do I need", i.e. including the headers.

Also the exhausts might exit the engine very close to the top chassis tubes making a very tight turn in the exhaust pipe necessary to clear it.

Have you got an overall space required width?

The standard exhaust manifolds used on the 164 direct the exhausts down and the side close to the engine terminating at about 50mm below the centre line of the crankshaft, the overall width is increased to around 620mm at its widest point, this would be about 130mm above centre line of the crankshaft. (see picture in archive)

This keeps the width reasonable but, as orwelly said it may very well snag the stering linkage.
