Zetec Engines ???
HI
Was just wondering what zetec engine i should go for??
The black top or the silver top?
What is the situeation with the sumps on the black top?? i understand the silver top one can be cut down and then welded up again, how much has to be
removed??
What type of inlet system are people using?? Has anyone used the Trust electrical inlet manifold with the omex ignition??
Just wanted to get people opinion on what they are using and what problems are faced with each engine to see what one is best to use.
Thanks in advance for any replys.
Cheers
Stu

Best to get a 2 litre pre 95 engine as the emissions are less strict at SVA plus its the most powerful std engine. Can be easily uprated too!
Sump needs chopping and baffled. Some people are using CVH tin sumps which will fit (still needs chopping but easier/cheaper than ally)
Clutch is a mish mash of cvh parts unless you go to Dunnells as they do a proper set. Cluch assembly and cut down sump £500!!!!!

Zetec
Sorry forgot to say i was going to go for a new unit as i wanted a new reg on the kit car.
So i will have to go with a CAT etc
Can i just use a std type 9 box with the normal zetec flywheel and then mix of clutch parts??
Cheers

Do a search on here for zetec clutch or zetec clutch components,it is possible to mix n match and will cost nowhere near donuts £500 for clutch and
sump.
An ali sump chop by a pro company may well cost around £180 from what i have heard but the clutch even from fords would not be too costly.
I think chrisg's website has the info for parts on a zetec so it may be worth a look.

you could try retro ford in corby. buy one of daves zetec flywheels for £80 and then a standard pinto clutch and type 9 box will bolt straight up
and i can guarentee they work cos im using one of his flywheels in my mk2 escort with zetec and type 9
oh and while there you could ask him what he does to the 1800 CVH sump that he sells for the zetec

I am installing a blacktop 2.0l Zetec, coupled to an MT75 gearbox, using pinto dohc starter. Clutch is standard 2.0l item, with a modified release
bearing - you can use the standard dohc sierra one with a spacer, i will try and find the drawing.
Don't forget you will need a spigot bearing in the end of the crank i think finis code 1596468. Checkout http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/
I am fabricating a new inlet manifold to use the existing throttle body system - as the engine is post 95 i need to run closed loop.

I've gone for Jenvey throttle bodies and a DTA ECU, not the cheapest option but not that much more expensive than the YKC option.
Martin Fox 07837 721986 supplied me at a very good price

The later Zetecs - the series 3 (~1999 onwards) - are the ones with two piece sumps - alloy top half and steel bottom half. They have a revised block
though, so don't expect 100% compatibility with eariler zetec engine mounts etc. The heads and flywheel/cluch arrangements are unchanged.

Mounts used for inline installation are the same...heads *are* different, though...

Think tiger do a cut and shut sump for about £80....Might be worth a phone call:

Not 100% on price or availability but as I said, worth a phone call as they are very nice and friendly people and will deffinately be able to sort you
out somehow....Oli.

ah yes, I'm thinking of the blocks front mount. I thought the inlet manifolds were all interchangable - what head differences are there?

Heads on the blacktop use solid lifters, silvertop are hydraulic.
I think there's a bit more meat between the bores on the blacktop, too - but not 100% convinced on this as I haven't seen a pair of
stripped blocks side by side.
All in all, a standard blacktop is reputably 10bhp up on the silvertop given the same state of tune...

If you are going for a new reg remember you can only fit one reconditioned item...tricky bit is getting a new diff or RWD Ford gearbox. I have seen
new MT75 gearboxes for £500ish.

I might be wrong but it says you can have one reconditioned part to still obtain a new reg, this is where i think the grey area is, they have
transmission as a whole not gear box and then differential. So do they both have to be new or one of them or can they both be reconditioned under the
tranmsmission heading. If everything else is new then that will be my one reconditioned part???
Might be wrong but they don't really explain exactly what they want. So i understand all they want to really see is reciepts??
Correct me if i am wrong??

As far as i understand the gearbox would have to be new and the engine reconditioned or the other way round. Whichever you get reconditioned you must
supply proof as with everything else you buy.

Yep I've also read that the blocks are meatier. They also have a much nicer location for the oil filter (no longer up-front in that
sevenesque-unfriendly location)and that they have teflon coated pistons too...
Shot in the dark - do you know the cross sectional area, or dimensions, of the inlet ports on the S3 head? I need them to do some throttle body and
manifold sizing, but don't want to strip mine just to measure it just yet...

That's how i understand it. That's what they did on "A Race Car Is Born" That was a Westfield and everything was new
except the engine which was a recon 1800 Zetec.
