Zetec engine options for MK

Time to bite the bullet....

I am looking at building a Zetec powered MK. I have sourced the engine and Ford have dated the code at April '95.
Two questions...

Is there anything I need to look out for on the engine before I part with the ££££...?
and
What the best options for ECU and throttle bodies?

Assistance greatly appreciated....

Zetecs are good for 200k easy. If you can here it running first it would be good. I wouldnt pay more than 200 quid for an engine unless its very low mileage,. Bike carbs and megajolt is the easiest in my opinion but the manifolds arnt cheap.

Theres several options.
Bike throttle bodies and megasquirt. Standard ecu's etc can be used.



If you havent got your kit yet may i sugest you look at this.

The most simple off the shelf option is Jenvey throttle bodies, Raceline inlet manifold and Emerald ECU.

The throttle bodies can be fitted in a couple of hours. They come with very clear instructions and all the linkages for the thottle (including a cable) and a very easy to fit fuel rail. Just bolt together job.

The Emerald is one of the most user frienly ECU you can get.
Wiring is done following a full wiring diagram which is clear and easy to understand so making up a loom is very straight forward.
Just plug into a PC/laptop load the software and you are off, no dealer only tuning here! It comes with a step by step booklet explaining what each option does and how to set it up. They even supply some maps from cars they have tuned in the past to get started or I can supply a copy of mine.
Best option is to get it tuned on their rolling road. Excellent back up and remember Dave Andrews (PPC-CCC mag fame is one of the best in the business).

Down side is that this is the most expensive route at about £1600 but I think the easiest...

Hi dave at emerald is dave walker not dave andrews. Althogh he will also answer to rave talker. And carl is there electronics man.

Anyway my pile of zetec parts for the engine change so far.

1800 zetec with 70K miles on was free
Pair of weber 40's in need of o refurb £80.
Rufurb kits £36.
inlet manifold for webers £87.50.
Megajolt built up unit £90.
Yamaha R1 fuel pump £15.

I saw a tiger running with this set up last year and although you can raise your game with 2 litre cams (or engine) plus some 45's its still a good starting point.

I know its not thottle bodies but its a start and a pretty cheap way of fueling.

Just got to build up the enthusasm to pull the pinto out and sort it now

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately I cant hear the engine running as its out of the car.

Can anyone expand on the bike carbs ..any bikes in particular ?

What money are the manifolds and where from?

if i were to be going the zetec route i would use some carbs off a suzuki GZXR 750 and then find a focus st170 inlet manifold as the whole lot will then bolt straight up so im told

however get what carbs you like nearenough any superbike will be fine and you can make your own manifold, like im doing or get bogg bros to make one up
