Sticky summer tyres
I am looking for tyres with a bit more grip than my present Simes offerings (came with the wheels).
I have 13 x 5.5J Minilites with 185/60 front and 205/60 rears.
I wanted A539s but they don’t list the rear size. Neither do Goodyear Eagles or Toyo T 1S/ T 1R.
I can get R888s or A048s but not doing track days and living in wet Scotland, I need a bit more longevity and wet grip.
Any suggestions other than change the wheels as I have just had them refurbished.

look at falken 502's and 512's, one of very few wider widths available in 13" and cheaper than the others mentioned, a fast road
tyre rather than a track day/race offering. available from mytyres.
how do the tyres sit on the rear? 5.5" rims with 205 tyres sounds quite a wide tyre for that rim!

Ned. They sit fine.
I've done 4000 miles since last August and no problems and they haven't been nancy wimp, pee the bed, girly miles either.
The back end does come out that's why I need more grip. I will look into the Falkens.

i would seriously consider the A021r
better wet performance than a normal road tyre, better dry performance and about 8000 miles to a set of rears (depending on driving style, usage,
power etc etc etc)

Ned. See what you mean with the 5.5J width. The yokos that givemethebighammer suggests
via the polley motorsport site recomend a minimum of 6J for the 205 A021s.
Should i be looking for 2 larger minilites for the rear or use my 5.5s?

looking at the recommended widths for toyos a while back i seem to remember 6.5-7 being the ideal/recommended width for a 205.
i've got 185 14" on 6j's at the moment and want something wider for the rear.
i would have thought the tyre would feel more stable on a wider rim, a bit less sideways flex in the sidewall if its strectchly slightly on the rim.
imho
Ned.

Kumho tyres
My local dealer has suggested Kumho 769s. Tells me there are plenty scoobies using them with no complaints.
Anyone had any experience of them?
185 - £50 + 205 - £47 fitted and balanced.

id change to 185s all round if it was mine. The wobbly sidewalls could explain the rear end lacking grip. My car is incredibly neutral on 185/60/13s.

Is it fairly normal then to have the same size all round and not wider at the rear?

Width of tires
If you have equal weight and not excessive power, equal width tires should give good results. The most common reason for fitting wider tires at the
rear are cosmetic, as I've even seen FWDs with wider tires at the rear...
To get most of the grip out of the tires the rim widths should be matched to the tires, in my opinion 5,5 on 185 is a bit narrow...

rim width will be specified by the tyre manufacturer. 205/60R13 toyo 888's can be fitted to a 5.5j rim, but a Yoko A032R the same size needs a
6j rim.
a 185/65 has a narrower tread than a 185/60. a 185/60 needs a wider rim than a 185/65.

My car has 195/50/15s all round. The car's balance is a bit oversteery. I have reduced the front tyre pressures a bit which has helped but
still, fast corners see the rear end run wide before the front end.
Wider tyres at the rear would increase rear grip making the car more neutral. 185s at the front are 1 size smaller than 195s and 205s on the rear are
1 size larger.

I haven't found much out about the Kumho 769s so I think that I am going to buy 4 Yoko A539s at 185/60/13.
I think that the better grip will compensate for the smaller size on the back.
The falken 502s fit the 5.5J with a 205/60 but they do not look as grippy as the Yokos.
Any comments to help me make my mind up would be appreciated.

I've just taken delivery of some 205 width falkens (for my everyday car) if you'd like any pics or anything.
not trying to persuade or convert, just offering.
I think the yoko's are a good choice they're what i have for my 7 in 14" variety

Ned. I have pictures of the Falkens and I do like the look of them BUT I am just worried that they are not as good as the Yokos
probably because they are so much cheaper and not as popular.
If I'm wrong please tell me as I do like the concept of larger tyres on the rear.
The Falkens are described as an everyday tyre, while the Yokos are sporty.
