Range Rover gearbox

Hi folks,

I'm considering going the Rover V8 route.
Old V8 Range Rovers/Land Rovers seem fairly plentifull and cheap.

Question is can I use the (LT77?) gearbox from a 4WD Range Rover - is it simply a case of removing the 4WD transfer box, or is there more to it?

Also, is it better to go for carbs or EFI?

Thanks

Not sure about the gearbox but the carbed V8 Range/Land Rover engine is low compression so only produces 130 odd BHP. The injected ones will produce more but you might have problems with space depending on which Range Rover engine you use as some have different timing cover/water pump pulleys which use 1 inch wide belts.

Best to look for an SD1 engine and get a P6 waterpump and bottom pulley and fit ted to it as this reduces the length of the engine buy about an inch and these engines produce 155bhp on carbs 190bhp on injection.

You'll probably need to remove the end cap (the bit that fixes to the transfer box), and replace it with a 2WD part. Also, from memory, the RR bellhousing is considerably longer than the 2WD version. As such you may find that the main shaft is also longer.

You may be better off finding a 2WD version. However yuo could talk to the likes of ashcroft transmissions and ask their advice.
