It's for mid-drive refueling. BM drivers are too important to stop like everyone else

that happens more often than you'd think in the states, when it takes 10min to pump the 1000gallons needed to keep your stupid 4mpg SUV thing
running
it doesnt help that most yanks have the attention span of goldfish!

You would think that all the spaceship technology inside the BMW would tell you that the fuel cap wasn't closed. Must have been a base model.

its a chav alert system! for chav's driving a car with a fuel cap on the left hand side, they can siphon fuel out of the BMW,
its the BMW owners fault really, he's missing his sign saying 'FREE FUEL HERE FOR CHAVS'
I love Pinto's, even if i did get mine from P&O!

Plus, i gather that in the US you can lock the nozzle on and go and do something else whilst your 1000000 gallon SUV fuel tank is filling!! That
would explain why it's probably common to forget about them and leave them in!

I've seen a similar thing in my local Morrison's filling station - a van pulled away from the LPG pump, loud bang, hose trailing from the
van. The LPG hose has to be firmly locked into the filling connector.
At least he stopped and went into the office...

I think it's the fact that a million gallons would cost £1,001,250 in the USA. Over here it would cost almost twice that amount! Typical
locosters it's not that we're anti-USA it's more that we're just tight!!!

yup its the reason you cant use phones in filling stations now. fat yanks with cheap knickers on used to get into and out of their cars thus
generating a charge which discharged when then next touched the nozzle, hence fire!
and the govenment in its wisdom banned using a phone in filling stations

I don't quite see the link between a static generated discharge and a mobile phone?
Mobiles should not be used in petrol stations due to the risk of spark if they are dropped and the battery is damaged. I don't suppose many
people realise but a Lithium Polymer battery as used in mobiles and laptops can explode in a fairly spectacular manner if abused...
As someone who dosn't feel the need to spend 90% of my life with a bloody phone clamped to my head I think it's a perfectly sensible
precaution.

iirc there has been more filling station fires due to the knicker issue than phones, but rather then tell people to stay at the pump rather than
jumping in and out of their cars all the time the phone gets the blame,
do really think that every body remember to turn off they're phone everytime they pump fuel?

Science Abuse (with Richard Hammond) filled a caravan with petrol and about 20 mob phones and had them all going off at the same time.
Caravan only blew up when a fuse was lit

No, and it wouldn't make any difference. As I said before, the danger comes from the possibily of dropping the phone onto the floor where all
the petrol fumnes are collecting and the battery falling ot and sparking as the contacts part. Without doubt the risk is slim, but it exists.

maybe they banned mobile phones to stop u being distracted? it may be why that bmw has a petrol hose hanging from it!
some of those rules are deffo important tho, when i was in kenya a few years ago we were filling up at a shell station and i kid u not there was a
tractor being filled up with its engine running, and a guy with a cigarette in his mouth filling up a car next to it!! also we were playing a game
of football on the forecourt. was a bit worring to say the least!

It was a long time ago now, but we saw some really bizarre things when we were there (Dec 73 - Jan 75).

Funny that - when wife went in for a bit of minor surgery a couple of months ago (private hosp), we asked about mobile phones. They said they're
fine, just have them on vibrate.
When I did my SVA, the building had signs for no mobiles, yet outside where about 40 aerials for mob phone co's.
Seems they're ok, so long as they are making money from them.
