Nissan CA180DET or Toyota 4AGE20V? Please help!

Hi there everyone - Newbie from Cape Town here...

I am about to start building my first Caterham/Lotus copy - Based on the book - and I am stuck on engine choice

My current options are the 4AGE20Valve - 115Kw Normally aspirated silvertop with ITB's and complete fuel injection - but it might be a problem to get the transmission for rear wheel drive - any advice on what transmission to use here?

My second option is the Nissan CA180 DET 1800cc Turbo motor at 150KW, gearbox not a problem to find but slightly more expensive - but is this motor too strong?

Any and all advice is welcome...

What diff would work bestin this setup? Preferrably looking for a limited slip differential with independant rear axles - any ideas or advice?

Your help will be appreciated on this one!

Thanks

i am using the nissan ca18 turbo but it needs a full rebuild first as it suffers with bottom end probs, nice neat small power plant easy to get well over 200 bhp out of it

there is a rare-ish rwd toyota gearbox that fits the 4age, from early corrolas. Alternatively, you could source a bellhousing adapter that would allow you to use a ford gearbox.

You would have to decide if you would prefer n/a or turbo performance - the nissan lump will easily tune to big power, but turbo lag isnt everyones best friend.

Rear end, in the uk most use sierra parts modified. Not sure if you have those in SA?

Thanks guys - Sierra parts are relatively easy to come by over here - so should not post a big problem

One or two other questions relating to the motors - apparently the 4AGE needs to have a smaller sump fitted in order to get the required road clearance - is this correct?

Will I have the same problem with the CA180? On the CA180 the sump is still above the bell-housing.....

Toyotas:
Hi, just take a 1" slice out of the sump above the horizontal baffle plate, and shorten the pick up by 1/2".
This is what I have ended up doing and this is after talking to the Aussie builders who have been playing with Toyotas for years in sevens.
Dont ask about my first sump!
I copied a well known Toyota specialists sump and had to rebuild the bottom end.

Once I've finished a project why do I start another?
