Private Plate transfers
I need to transfer the private plate from my Dad's car onto another vehicle - how????
Do I need to go into my local DVLA office?

Complete a V317 cherished transfer application form and take that with your V5 and MOT certificate to the local dvla office and pay the £80 transfer
fee. Simple as that.
Or so i thought until I wanted to transfer my plate to my wifes car. I had to gift the plate to her as the owner of the car had to be the owner of the
private plate. The DVLA charged me £25 for the pleasure.
Hope this makes sense.

I've done it several times - never had a problem swapping owners of the plates like you.
Take the MOT cert and V5 for BOTH cars. You may need the tax discs as well, if not they will request them at a later date.

If not Taxed you need insurance too
Be prepared for a wait though
Took mine in for the new tin top and they took 2 weeks
Target is 7 working days
This was Nottingham some are worse so I am told!!
What made me wonder was when I went to fetch it they hadn't done it... they then took 20 minutes!!
What we pay our taxes for eh?

Thanks chaps - as I'm not the registered keeper of one of them (the one it's comin from) does it make a difference? My dad owns the one
it's on, I own the one it's going to.
And does the one that looses the private plate just revert back to it's original number or get a new one?

Just retained a plate, and the car was issued with an "age" related plate.
The DVLA website has a fairly good Q & A section on transfers, retentions etc.
