Crossflow Ignition

Hello,

I'm going to order up some random bits and bobs for my crossflow, I suspect i have some ignition wierdness, and am going to replace the points, and condensor.

Is there anything else I should change? I have a new coil, which i've yet to fit, is there any difference in coil for a lucas/bosch system? Assuming its unballasted etc..

Is it worth giving this a go:

Is it really that simple?

Cheers

David

Ideally you should replace the whole dizzy with a Bosch one from a Valencia engine (can't remember which Ford it comes from). With this you will need a 12v coil and no ballast resistor in the circuit.

At a stroke you will do without the points & capacitor, and will have next to zero maintenance from then on.

And yes, it really is that simple!

cheers,
David

Valencia dizzy was fitted to early Fieastas.

whace cc is your engine? The 1300 block is less tall than 1600 so if you are planning to fit twin dcoe carbs you will not get the distributor cap under the manifold. The motor craft dizzy is not as tall as the Bosch type.

You could consider using the maplin ignition amp - this takes the high current out of the points so they should wear out i.e. no adjusting.

You can get the distributor shortened, I have one that came with my striker as it had a 1300xflow with DCOE's originaly. I don't know who offers this service though.

1300 with standard motorcrap carb. Plan is to make this run properly, tool around in it until i get the hang of it, then i may go for something a bit more powerful.

I wont be fitting my twin webers for a while, so i'll be fine hopefully with this setup.

Is it the same dizzy on all the valencia engines, or do i need a specific fiesta one?

Cheers

The 1300 Escort, circa 1990/1991 had the valencia engine too. Just need to rid mine of the vac. advance so the 40s can go on

You can keep the Vac advance on the dizzy if you fit a T into the manifold..
if you do not run a vac advance you will not have any advanced ignition curve and will reply soley on the centrafugal advance weights to advance your curve , to 30- 32 .deg.

Are you going to mod your dizzy as it can be done ?

Hope this helps..
Andrew

At this stage I'm going to stick with the static advance, as its the simplest way forward, in the nearish future, I can see myself getting megaspark or something similar since it should be a relatively painless upgrade and will give me something to play with.

In the mean time I just want to make it to the SVA station (*gutted*)

After i get it on the road then I'd like to get the vac advance sorted out.

Cheers

If you are going to stick with the static advance and no vac advance i would be tempted to advance your ignition at TDC or she will be so flat you will take the webbers off, but even worse it will kick 10 tonnes of Sh*T out of your exhaust valves if it runs retarded.

good luck at the SVA
if you need any help just ask

Andrew
