oem duratec turbo's?

Just wondered if anyone could confirm this but the last couple of weeks some of the normal cars they've tested (quick saloons last week and hot mpvs this) have had me wondering about sharing the engines.

The ford cmax last night had a 220bhp turbo engine, think they said it was 2.3 (or was it 2.5)ltr and the previous week i'm sure the 250bhp odd mazda 6 mps thing was 2.3 turbo.
Got me wondering as to whether these are duratecs or variants seeing as mazda/ford share components as ford owns % of mazda etc etc

Ned.

Yeah, there's a turbo'd Duratec Mazda out now AFAIK. Read about it last week IIRC.

Cheers,
James

Due to the enourmous amount of money spent on design and manufacture nowadays it makes economical sense to component share.

Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar, Ford, Aston Martin all have a common component pool from which to draw. Bit similar to the VAG and PSA only larger...

I thought that the engine in that S-max is the same one as the Focus ST. Which i believe is the Volvo 5 cylinder turbo (T5)

But i may be wrong

im fairly sure r3nuf is correct, its cheaper to use and engine thats already sorted rather than develop a new one.

Sorry for a bit of a highjack

is the 1.6 duratec the same as the 2.0 unit?

I'm thinking for a sneaky street Ka upgrade I was wondering if its a faily straight forward engine swap

what can I say I like small cars lol

you are totally correct, they are the same engines, my mate works at volvo and ive checked out the computer and its not even rebadged its got ford written all over it the the S-max, St and T5 share the same engine- but have different ECus

and the new volvo small car is actually a ST floor pan/chassis and some panels are the same- ive seen one and its very impressive and slightly better looking than the ST

but as you can see its far to similar to miss- i seen it with a little less black covers on than this and i thought it was a ST at first i think its call a c30

thats what i thought at first after reading all the info from here, i seen a post that mentioned that before but ive got a 1.6 SE sport Focus and a 1.6 duratec street car- and the engines are not the same- they dont look it anyway and the street car is way faster, and the power bands are different and the rev limiter are set at diff levels

3 weeks ago I was in the Ford Plant in Genk. They are starting to build the new SUV and S-max Galaxies there. In the 'hall of fame' were they show the history of the plant, (mk 1&2 escorts, cortinas, sierra's, mondeos transit etc)
they have a layout model of the trans they use on the Galaxy. It will be a common platform that will share the same underpinnings as the the new Mondeo out next year.

It has what looked like to me a Duratec motor on the front with turbo hanging off the back. On the display next to it was a ST220 that looked quite menacing in the polished hallway!!

The 5 pots used in the Ford range are not the same engines as the 5 pot in the T5.
It's similar, but smaller, it's a cheaper version of the T5 engine (still by Volvo), different castings and not as strong (less tuning potential).

I believe the Focus 1.6 is a Zetec-E while the Ka 1.6 is a Zetec-SE / Sigma engine.

puma/fiesta/focus 1.6 are the zetec se (sigma) has I helped seadog source his from some scrappers. late focus blacktop is best apparantly as focus had tubular manifold which is easier modded to suit a kitcar than the cast job on the other engines.

The Sierras had a 1.6 Zetec that turned into the 1.8 & 2.0 Zetec E's (Focus, Mondeo)

The Duratec HE is the 1.8/ 2.0/ 2.3 replacement for the Zetec E - its basically a new engine but has more in common with old Mazda's (e.g. bell housing pattern is Mazda not the old Ford 4cly)

1.25, 1.4, 1.6 & 1.7 Zetec's are the sigma engine or zetec S or SE (completely different - the inlet/ exhaust are on opposite sides compaired to the Zetec E)

most old KA's are 1.3's (also old 1.1 & 1.3 fiesta's and escorts) - Endura block - based on the Valencia block - a shortened Kent X-flow form the original 1976 fiesta (they have pushrods, not OHC's)

but I think the 1.6 in the sport KA is a newer but cheaper Brazilian SOHC 8v head version of the sigma and the latest KA's have a 1.3 version of this engine (they call it a Duratec as well now)

btw - they also call the new V6's Duratecs

Have a look on Burton's website (tech support) : BurtonPower.com

Oh - and the s-max is the same 2.5 turbo as the Focus ST = Volvo engine (re tuned a bit)

Are you sure - the Galaxy is a VW (as is the Seat thing)

The current mondeo has a common platform with the Jag X-type, Mazda 6 and the new Landrover Freelander (just out)

nope... ive got to disagree the (54plate) Ka is definatley a 1.6 16v duratec and newer design than the Zetec/sigma (SE) 1.6 in my focus(v reg)

oh and The ford Sport Ka's must have 2 different 1.6 engines- cause my engine does not look like this 1.6 one...

Do ford like to mess about or what...why cant the make it simple and stop calling the same engines dif names??

These engines are the same, ive got the print outs here from volvo and BJP services got me a ST engine layout today, (cause we might have a St engine soon, woo hoo) and they are both the same. well they look exact!?!?! my mate at volvo still recons the only differences are the Turbos, the manidfolds, and the Ecus!

cant see them going to all that trouble to remake the 5 cyl engine , see ford know where its at .

also ,, all the volvo tuners are offering focus ST upgrades .

It was stolen from an online conversation between a Ford mech and a Volvo owner in the uk.car.maintenance newsgroup.

I know, I know, never believe anything you read online, but the bloke really knows his onions and if he's wrong, then it's the first time I know of

I'm willing (and expecting) to be corrected though of course
