God no!

There are 2 sizes of sierra diff - 9" and 9 1/2". The thing to do is either get the right one to fit your chassis design, or mount the brackets to suit your diff.

Are you building the chassis yourself or buying a kit?

cough 7" and 7 1/2" cough

to fit in a book width chassis best bet is to get the drive shafts shortened, or use different offset rear wheels.

but as you will be departing from the book chassis if you go independant rear suspension you might as well wait for the next edition of the book, which is sierra based.

as discussed in this thread

One driveshaft is shorter than the other, so use two short ones, and offset diff slightly!

Hello...

Think there's confusion here. Are you talking about the diff itself, or the whole axle width - i.e. the diff + driveshafts?

You certainly dont need to (and couldn't) narrow the diff. You dont need to shorten the driveshafts either - you just need wide rear arches (about 12" for a book-width chassis, commonly available from the many manafacturers that use the standard sierra axle with a book-width chassis. But if you want the car to be as narrow overall as a book car, then yes you do need to shorten the sierra driveshafts.
