Turbo Size

If i wanted to turbocharge a hayabusa engine, what sort of turbos do people use?

From my calculations, based on a Volumetric efficiency of 100%, at 10psi boost pressure the flow is 28.35lb/min of air.

I'd like to know the CR of the stock engine too, i don't think it would be safe to run more than 9.5CR with 95octane fuel.

Thanks.

In my experience, tuners give very little away about their turbo specs but you might like to give http://www.mc-xpress.com/ a try.

You'll probably know this already but they are the guys behind the ghostrider 2 busa turbo and have details of 600bhp + turboed busa engine on their website.

might be somewhere to start anyway.

Cheers

Do not go too down with the CR. Remember that bike engines are designed to breath past the 10,000 rpm in which case you will experience it in seconds. When you factor in the cam/valve overlap you will realise that your effective compression ratio is less than the specified.

Haven't seen you around lately! I am fabricating a new exhaust before my first drive.

Hey PHIL!!!! well ... you're a busy man, not very polite to bother you

I'm still deciding what to put in the car. Looks like it will be a busa engine. My problem is that I cannot live with a stock engine, so most probably i'll end up turbo-ing it, pretty much like anything we built in the past

So this means i came come over and take a peek ?

I think my mate's turbo busa install uses the same turbo as a Volvo T5 uses, which is a Mitsubishi turbo IIRC.

There's various pics of the build including a few of the turbo itselfhere

holeshot racing, on their website, say they use a modified mitsy turbo.

I was surfing a while ago on the same subject.

Basically throw away the rule book with bike engines, you need a big turbo....

Even a humble blade engine will require a turbo suitable for a 2000cc + car.

Yeah. That's true. Infact based on my spreadsheet calculations it turns out that i need a Turbo that's efficient and can pump plenty of air at low pressure ratios.

Infact something that would be ideal for a 2000-2200cc car engine as far as airflow is concerned. my next question is what sort of trim and A/R the turbine side needs to be? For that i need an engine, a selection of different turbos and an engine dyno. Something that will not be happening So i'll need to find a good soul, and disclose some information for me

Yep, I think the one used on the Volvo is a Mistubishi because Bazzer bought his turbo and manifold from Holeshot, but said had he known he'd have sourced it himself for less through regular turbo retailer.

or alternatively garrett gt2876 would be at peak efficiency at those numbers.

I was more on the lines of a GT2540R .... however the turbine A/R choice is still haunting me.

10psi of boost gives a pressure ratio of ~1.7 so with a gt25 you will be off the right hand side of the compressor map at 28lb/min of flow.

That's why i went for the GT2540R ... uses a GT28RS compressor. Anyway ... this is all speculation ... expensive bits need lots of homework to be done before hand!! most importantly i need to buy myself the car-kit and engine first hehehe.
